servicing saxo rear drum brakes, any tips?

    Hi all

    Newbee here

I'm going to be replacing the rear brakes (drum) as a favour on a friends Citroen Saxo 1.1 Designer (52 plate) on Friday and just wondered if there are any pitfalls / special tools or time saving tips I should know about?

The car is non modded and used under normal ‘family driving’ conditions.

I have done drum brakes a few times before but never on a Saxo and unfortunately I don't have a Haynes manual or a service manual so will be working by sight only.

I just read MattWild's excellent 'how to' thread on here, sadly that was for disc type brakes, does anyone know if there's a step by step 'how too' for drums posted anywhere? I've tried the search button but it's taken a dislike to me lol.

    Many thanks in advance

Pretty much the same as any drum brake system dude, nothign unusual to look out for.

Cheers for that Gabbs, glad to hear it, wasn't looking forward to having the wheels off and then sitting there scratching me head looking a right plonker

oh well, at least the weather outlook is good, nothing like skinned knuckles in the rain lol

    cheers all

Thanks for that Dave, it's damned good advice, I'd have been lost without the digicam lol, bit of a jigsaw puzzel aren't they :o)

Well I managed the brakes without too much of a problem, but I can't get the hubs back on ??

It's almost as though the bearings have got too big or something

I've lined up the hub with the shaft carefully, used a block of wood and given it a good ole whack with a hammer but they just won't go back on?? Am I being too carefull perhaps? I'm a bit worried about hitting it too hard and causing damage to the bearings, or is there some sort of puller / mandrill I should be using to get the hubs back on?

I'm a bit stuck here to be honest

    any advice greatfully recieved ......

    Things to try:

    1. Make sure the shoes are sat correctly

    2. Make sure the adjusters are all the way off

    3. Check for contact between the linings and drum when first sliding over the stub axle. If this is happening then one of the above is wrong.

    4. Clean up stub axle

    5. Lots of grease, on inside of bearings and on stub axle.

After this pictures are needed if none of the above work

Make sure that the hand brake isn't on. Not that I made that mistake....
