Larger VTS Oil Filter?

  1. #1
I've heard of someone who apparently fitted a "larger" oil filter to his VTS to help the oil cooling when on track.

Has anyone else done this or know about it? I've got an oil change coming up and would be interested in doing it.

Oil filter is an oil filter, I don't see how a larger capacity one helps with cooling?

The standard VTS oil cooler does a decent enough job - fit a Nissens aluminium radiator if you want to improve how quick it can remove heat from the system. It's only worth getting an aftermarket oil cooler if you do a lot of track work, and have boost/ a raised rev limit.

only thing a larger filter would do would increase oil capacity slightly.

    Yeah fair enough.

My oil temperature does seem to run worryingly high on track though. Rev it up to the red line in 4th and the oil temp creeps right up to the top, and that's in a 20 minute session.

I've bought some Gulf Racing 5/40 which I hope will help a bit.

I should probably also buy an after market temperature gauge as I suspect the standard one isn't that accurate.

get a 10 row oil cooler on there m8, will be ur best option

Mine sat consistently between the half and max during a track day in hot weather, never any higher. Was yours reaching the top and putting the light on?

Where does your oil temp gauge sit when driving around the doors? Could be the temp sensor isn't as accurate as it once was.

For light track use, you'd be better off fitting a Nissens aluminium radiator rather than an oil cooler tbh. The standard VTS oil cooler/ heat exchanger dumps the heat from the oil into the radiator. You're kinda killing two birds with one stone when increasing the efficiency of the system.

It wasn't putting the light on no, when I saw it getting high I started short shifting which kept it just above 3/4.

Normal driving, well, really light gentle driving around town when it's clear and it'll sit only just above the middle. On the motorway at a steady 80mph and it's nearly at 3/4. Spirited back road driving will push it up to 3/4 too.

I'm doing a track day at Rockingham in September so I might see how it goes around there and then look at my options.

Any idea what kind of cost I'd be looking at for the radiator / cooler?

Ah right, I'd say your temperatures are fine then - sounds like the gauge is being a bit pessimistic... not that they're accurate anyway. I wouldn't worry about it unless the light actually comes on, then I'd ease off or go into pits and let the car cool for a bit. It says in the owners handbook for oil temp that anything up to the light is acceptable.

Can get Nissens ally radiators for £90ish delivered off eBay. Some fresh coolant and oil along with one of those radiators should give you a visible improvement in oil and coolant temps imo.

Alright cheers sounds like it's not too bad then.

It's recently been treated to a new water pump and coolant flush so with the fresh competition oil in hopefully it'll behave its self.

What have you done to yours to help cooling on track mate?

Sounds like it's more than ready for a good thrashing - enjoy yourself and don't worry about it.

Bugger all mate, haven't even wrapped my manifold.

Will probably lob a Nissens rad in when I decide mine has seen better days.
