Temp Gauge not working??

Basically coolant temp gauge doesnt move on my mates vtr phase 2. The fan kicks in and out as it should.

Is there two temp sensors one on the thermostat housing and one underneath the housing. I took the 3 pin plug apart on the top sensor plug and took the warning light wire off the sensor and the temp gauge moved a little and obvs temp light came on and fan kicked it. When i replace the wire on the sensor the gauge drops to nothing again and the light goes off.

I think i need to replace the sensor but dont know what its called as all the motorfactors can find is the single pin sensor under the housing.

However there is also a wire spiced into the warning light wire which earths out under the coilpack bolt when i remove this wire the warning light comes on!!

    thanks dan

Me thinks its the same prob as me, mine starts off in the middle then slowly drops rock bottom as engine warms. Pretty sure it needs a new temperature sensor to the dash.

possibly does the sensor to the dash sit onto of the thermostat haousing??

When i first brought my Mk2 VTR, i was sold it cheap as he thought it had electrical problems... and didnt knw much about the car. and as i have a good back ground knwledge and understanding in cars. the temp gauge allways stayed at half temp, were ever u just gave it some wellie, or if its been off all night. even with out the ignition on it would stay same position. also, you had to have the lights on for c.d player to work, interior light in middle postion for c.d player to work, and if the doors opened it would cut the c.d player out. i thought worse comes to worse i will break the car and get my money back.. i changed a few broken fuses and it all went back to normal again. i got a 2001 VTR, extremely cheap. not sure if it is the same in your situation, check the fuses though.
