106 cold air to Mani?

   This is for my friends 106.
   
   We were looking at his air feed today, and noticed the standard pipe from the front of the car joins up with a pipe from the mani in like a t junction, then this goes up to the air box?
   
   We just wondered heat this was actually doing?
   
   Is it taking cold air to the mani swell,, or hot air upwards and into the sir filter too?
   
   I can get a picture tomorrow if it would help?

   Is this on a SPI blacktop engine? Pre 2000?
   
   If it is I think it's there to help with cold starts. It sucks warm air through to aid cold starts is what I've heard.
   
   Could be totally rubbish. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
