drirveshaft problem!

  1. #1
had to change the wheel bearing yesterday and found that the drivceshaft gaitor was split,so i thought id change the gaitor
when i removed the shaft i found that the inner cv joint is very noisy,so time for a new shaft this where my problem lies
phoned around a few places some say varying prices anyway found one that had one in stock so off i trot to get it
when i get there the shaft is a one piece driveshaft where mine has the intermediate bearing so off he goes to get the other shaft he has in stock
this time its got the intermediate bearing but is flat on the outer joint where mine is tapered
why is it so hard to find the right shaft
my car is a w reg vtr and he used the reg to get the part numbers for the shafts
could it be that my car had the flat shafts and hubs fitted at the factory and has since had tapered ones fitted
anyway im stuck now with no car until i phone around tomorrow about the right shaft or just get mine recon'd

W is within the changeover period, would be more accurate probably if you gave the vin/ chassis number, when ordering

yeah in hindsight i should of, but the guy in the spares shop was adamant that his parts book was spot on until i showed him my old driveshaft against the one he was selling me,he looked very confused then
my other problem is finding any of them in stock anywhere

Reg number dictates when your car was registered, not manufactured. So can't rely on it with parts that changed. That's why it's difficult when ordering with a reg number on times.

The tapered shaft was introduced more than a year before the w plate came out though. Your car would have to have been sat around waiting to be registered for 2 yrs to have flat shafts. Doesn't really happen.

I recently replaced both shafts in my vtr, i would recommend gsf, good service, parts guy was spot on, both shafts fitted perfectly, good price too.

yes i tried gsf but even they didnt have stock
ive never been asked for the chassis number for any of my cars ive bought parts for except my impreza but that was to know if it was a import or not
i did tell him it was a uk car car but he was a twat
