Alternator wiring

Iv been smelling a hot plastic circuit board smell for a few days in the saxo so the other night i stuck my head under the bonnet to see if it was anything and it smelt it was coming from the alternator but yesterday the battery died and 2 other batterys i had on me because i was on a long trip (i took a spare and got one when i was there because my spare had died) anyway iv been outside and lifted the bonnet to have a look thinking im going to be removing the alternator but iv found all the wiring that plugs into the alternator is burnt out and shorted!! why should this happen???? heat from the manifold?? its a vts by the way.

Has the wiring been resting on the manifold? Because that would burn the insulation allowing the wires to short out I would recommend re insulating the cables and re route them so they are away from anything hot

Iv just cut the burn out wire out and put new in the place and insolated it well, im going to cable tie it as far away as poss from the manifold. It wasnt touching the manifold but i think some 16vs have a heat shield to protect the wires? mine dont have that. The big terminal has broken off the big fat wire due to going brital! iv had to cut around 30cms of the wiring out and replace because its just breaking up.
