How to: gloss black bumper strips guide.

  1. #1
Hi guys, thought this question is asked quite a lot so thought i'd put myself together a little guide on how to make your bumper strips gloss black.

it was a rather quick guide on a spare bumper so please dont judge lol.

    Step 1 (preparation):

1st off before you do anything you need to prepare yourself and the bumper.

    what you need:
    Plastic Primer.
    Gloss black/Black spray paint.
    Lacquer.
    Sandpaper varies from 120-1200.
    Masking Tape.
    A Bumper.

Tape up the bumper around the black strips so no paint is going to go on the bumper. use as much or as little as you need depending on how accurate you are.

    Step 2 (sanding):

so we now need to sand the bumper, for this is used 120gritt (due to the condition of the bumper) but if yours is smooth then i'd recommend around 240gritt.

once its sanded it should look something like this.

once that is done, wipe down the surface to remove any particles, as this will affect the outcome.

    Step 3 (priming):

we now need to prime the bumper using our plastic primer. i recomend 2-3 coats of primer, sanding in between.

using the primer, spray the designated area.

after that has tried (around 15-25min) sand it down using 400-600gritt.

continue this until you are satisfied.

    Step 4 (spraying):

once that has fully dried, we now need to spray the bumper using your chosen paint. (i only used some cheap black paint for the guide)

leave to dry in between coats (30-45min) i would recommend around 2-3 coats, but thats up to you.

once your are happy with your job. leave a further 1hour for it to completly dry.

    Step 5 (lacquering):

once it has dried we now need to apply lacquer to the bumper to give it a more shiny effect and chip resistant strength.

apply the lacquer across the bumper strip, i would only say 2coats for this.

once that has been sprayed leave overnight to dry. heres the outcome (note this was rushed so not perfect job):

Hope that helps. please comment on your thoughts.

Looks good, just i thought you would make it look super smooth. you can still see the texture of the bumpstrip

you dont have to, unless you want it like that. but that involves a lot of sanding, which i was prepared to do. haha

Personally i got the same outcome by simply spraying some Back-To-Black from Tesco and giving it a rub

    Either way im painting

Bit drastic. You just need to clean the bump strips properly and treat them frequently and they will come up a treat.

Mate this may be a n00b question, but here goes, will the masking tape take leave sticky marks on the bumper or take some of the paint off?

Any idea roughly how much it would cost to have front and back bumpers and sidestrips vinyl wrapped? also is it good quality/looks as good as a respray?

to get them vinyl wrapped you would need the surface to be very smooth as the vinyl espeically in black shows up any imperfections. Plus the surface would have to be smooth for the vinyl to stick properly.

then you go out for a drive, and after 10 minutes you end up with massive amounts of dust glued to the bumper.
