Leak problems...

Okay, new to Saxperience so please be nice! Basically I found water sitting in the passenger foot well the other day; thought it was the sunroof but I checked it out and it isn't. As far as I can see it is getting in through in a small area in or around the top corner of the windscreen and running down and resting under the carpet. It’s starting to smell like a wet dog.

Also there appeared to be water dripping from the plastic at very bottom of the dash near the bonnet release lever. If I put my hand round behind directly to the left of the lever it felt wet. To me it didn't seem likely that the water was running from the other leak and finding its way there. There's like a small plastic 'box' bit attached to the plastic with metal on top which is all rusty. The water seems to be coming from this bit somehow. If you need help understanding where I mean I can upload some pictures lol.

The other day when it rained the whole underside of that plastic dashboard on the passenger side seemed to be wet as if the water was running along it…

I'm also not 100 per cent sure of the first leak either... but it's really getting on my tits now.

Probably easy to find and fix, but any ideas? Want to get it fixed while its not raining all day every day!

    Cheers,

There is a rubber grommit that comes through from the back of the engine bay with the wiring loom, its pretty easy to see. Check that isn't missing / ruined?

If you put some pics up, I think people will be able to grasp where you mean and advise.

    P.S. Welcome

Thanks for the speedy reply MunkyBoy! Hmm, hadn't thought of that. When I get a spare moment I'll take a couple of pics so you can see where I mean.

What about the first leak? It seems to be coming in that area near the corner of the windscreen and then running down the back of the plastic pillar trim and rolling round under the carpet...?

Top corner of the windscreen? A guy on here had a leak there the other week, I believe it turned out to be the windscreen seal that was letting in water?

I think that he put sealant in it as a temporary fix, and was going to get a new windscreen seal in.

If you have a quick search, there are a few people who have had the odd leak here and there! Most of them have answers about where they came from.

Glad I'm not the only one! I'll check out the grommet when I get round to it. It's not been raining too much lately so it'll all be dry and therefore more difficult to tell...

Checked all that out. Had the headlining down and all the trim up there and all was good. Not the sunroof or anything like that, I'm sure. Seems to be a bit of green stuff in a join in the metal literally a couple of inches away from the top of the passenger 'A' pillar there so that's why I say it's coming in in that corner.

    ... but you never know!

Had the same problme with my car at the beginning of the year.

Turns out when I had a new windscreen fitted, they didn't do it with enough sealant and this caused the leak to come in through the gap, down the side of the windscreen, behind the plastic and in to the drivers foot well.
Mission to find the source of that leak though!

Ahh yeah, water always seems to take the weirdest routes...

OK, I think I've found where the water is coming from near the bonnet release. I checked out all the rubber seals and grommets for the cables and they're all in pretty good order.

If you remove the fuse/EOBDII port access cover on the passenger side and stick your head in and look to the left there is like a metal strip with a few holes in which is attached to the dashboard. Well to me the water seemed to be dripping from somewhere (sometimes I can hear a dripping onto plastic like sound inside the car when raining - not sure if this is it) down behind this and coming through the holes and running down it to the bottom of the dash before dripping off the very far left bottom corner of the plastic and ending up soaking under the carpet... If you get me?

Sorry for the long explanation but you'll see what I mean if you look in the same place. If not I can upload some pics.

    Cheers for the help,

Okay guys it's all sorted now. Found the leak. Fortunately it's only coming in in the same one place - the top of the windscreen seal right at the end of the nearside black rubber strip that runs along the length of the roof... if you know where I mean.

Have had some blu-tak temporarily sealing it but I got some silicone and just about to go seal it now, then start drying her out!

Thanks for the pointers guys. If I have anymore (which I wont) I'll let you know.

    Time for a I think

Erm, I'm no expert so probably not the best person to answer, but could it be a window or door seal/weatherstrip? What about a sunroof?

i have water in the passenger footwell. not sure if its the sunroof everytime i go round a corner with window open when rainin it runs off roof and soaks me. or is it the water meant to drain off ?

ive got the exact same problem so im glad i came across this.

Aah, erm, my first guess would be a seal somewhere, or the area around the sunroof winder/interior light, perhaps the aerial seal... I really don't know, I'm sure if you search around you can find the answer somewhere.
