Exhaust noise (volume wise) serious

  1. #1
Ok here is the question :

With trackdays apparently seeming to be tightening up on noise levels , just thought we could get a list some readings of what volume each set up makes.

Normally done 1/2 meter from Tail pipe at 3/4 max revs

    Here is my set up

    induction kit : Raceland enclosed
    Manifold : Standard
    Exhaust : standard with decat
Reading :82 dB read at croft, 77db read at elvington

Any more people got any readings ? I am thinking of getting a magnex & a 4 branch anybody got any readings for this setup ?

i got 85 dB at cadwell with a supersprint race back box and middle box, raceland mani with throttle bodies.

was done 1/2 meter from the exhaust at 4.5k.

i got 86db at combe with 4 branch decat and magnex backbox with pipercross viper. also done at the usual 1/2 mtr at 4.5k

I know u have been debating over this for a while jon! wat u have to think is that most track day limits are around 95db restricted on strict tracks?
Noise levels measured in decibels actually double for every 3db. So 86 Db is twice as loud as 83Db. not 172 like u wud assume it to be. So by fitting a performance exhaust system, it might sound a lot louder, but it really isnt!

I am stuck at 88db at 3/4 revs if i want to use one of my local tracks, but looking at some other trackdays I can get a descent discount for having a quieter car.

I have been debating whether to swap to an M3 for trackdays, but If I don't do that i need to increase the power of the saxo. But leaving the std manifold & exhaust sytem on may strangle it a bit.

But at the minute where the sound meter is on the track means In the last 3rd of the track at croft, means I cannot run close to other cars throught that section, so then by the time I get to the main straight I am too far behind to get past them, so once again by the next lap I am up there arse again & then have to back off again.

I can get away with being close to std noise making cars, but anything slightly noisier & i keep getting to to back off them or we trip the sound meter.

seems a stupid way to measure it tbh. dont they measure it before u go on? surely by mesuring it like that ur gonna get noise from other cars anyway so it wont be accurate. there must be other cars on track that are running performance exhausts? tbh i dont think ive ever seen anyone on track using a standard one. i seen evos etc puttin out about 130db so i dunno how they get away with it

Measure you before you go on & whilst on track if you get close to someone & buzz the noise meter you can get took off ?

They have said that they are gonna put me in a different group next time as apart from a couple of big power 1.8t cars in our group , the saxo was just catching up with cars lap after lap

i cant see the sense in measuring u whilst ur on track! its not suddenly gonna change!

which track you planning on going to ?

I might even buy a cheap sound meter tbh, I have seen a couple of cars turned away with no refunds before ?

As for your noise I have no idea, some one will be along in a minute who will know i guess

103 dB WTF ? those kam backboxes must make some noise

    Induction: Raceland
    Manifold: Standard
    Exhaust: Pugsport 3"
    Reading: 86db at 4500 (I think).

You need to head South to Cadwell, no trackside sound checks.

What diameter pipework are you looking to get?

Even if its 2.25", a 3 box system should be quite(ish).

My car is going to have a 3" system and 1 silencer, so knockhill is my only option lol

yes loads and i loved it, especially when it popped at 3k rpm. even with the cat and silencer back on its still not that quiet

Yer but a middle box really brings the noise down chris, I have the same system bar I have a middle box and I am only 85.

    limits still 105db at knockhill.
Yet i have never seen anyone measured on a hot hatch / speed sunday.
And you get some loud cars! and i mean loud

They say 105 but like you said they never measure it

Don't think Teesside Autodrome measure noise levels either (... or at least they didn't when I was there).
