Important! : gearbox

For the people that gave me the answers i needed, when i wanted to diagnose the problem with my gear's being hard to get into gear etc.

i need some new gear linkage's
gear selector arm ( its bent )
and some gear linakge ball joints.

any idea how much these should all cost, and is it a job capapble for an intermediate mechanic, with a basic set of tools? if not how much from a garage?

    many thanks again.

Fitting the linkages is not to hard Dan, even with basic tools. Just take your time and make sure the car is on axle stands (not just a jack - it's not worth the risk mate).

Not sure on cost unfortunately, I think an average garage will charge about £40 an hour but I may be wrong! i would think an hour too an hour half labour to do the job.

Please some one correct this if I am wrong.

    mini ramps is good

im sure you can get to two linkages from the engine bay after removing the airbox

use a spanner or a ball joint splitter to pry the linkages

pop the new ones on, do one at a time so you dont get them mixed up oh and also a little grease helps pop the on easier

the others you can get from underneath behind the gearbox

    total linkages 3

and you'll be able to see the selector rod underneath however aint done them

a 14mm open ended spanner is perfect for the gear linkages!!

either that or some long nose pliers.

but first, check to see where the movement is... are the linkages themselves worn, has the the locating pin that holds the selector arm on the gearbox worn and is allowing it to wobble about excessively?? this is very common... you can either get the pin and arm replaced (not cheap and a pain in the a$$ to do with the box in the car), or what most people do, is just get it welded up!! most garages could do this for you.

Hi colin, erm i dont know exactly what it is i need to replace if i am honest. i had a mate of mine who no's abit more than me with stuff like that come take a look, and as i moved the gear stick side to side in neutral, he was in the engine bay and said tht the ball join on the end of a gear linkage had way to much play and needs replacing. also i knw that my 'gear selector arm' is bent as u can see it has a twist from standing over the engine bay and looking down.

Probably best to pay someone profesional to look and tell me what it is i need exactly. Will a bent selector arm make it harder to go into gear's 1st & 3rd ?
    many thanks
