Wrong, All HID bulbs that fit in place of a road vehicles standard Halogen bulbs are illegal to use on the road. This is as any vehicle made within your life time has to legally have BS or ECE approved bulbs to be used on the road. Absolutely none of the conversion bulbs are said approved for such application and in so are all illegal to use on the road in the UK.

As an MOT is not a comprehensive test of a vehicles legality some kits will pass and some will fail. It all depends on the specific kit and how its fitted and setup. The MOT only tests things like you have hi and low, beam colour, beam pattern, that there is no delay from hi to lo, there is no flickering and so on.

If HIDs are illegal then why do people bother? is it actually a dead give away to police that you have HID's and not xenon headlamps?

Good question. Also why do people fit tint there front windows, fit race harnesses and fit blue side lights to there road car? Or even drive about with there fog lights on even when its not foggy? Or do 100mph on the motorway? All illegal but all relatively common.

anybody had any problems with there ebay kits or had any problems with the police ?

Many times have followed police, been followed by police and not a single question asked about them, also never been flashed by oncoming vehicles etc. If you choose to attract attention to yourself then the police will start asking questions.
