Fan not working?

  1. #1
    Hi guys and girls..

Slight problem, Yesterday I was driving and noticed the fan didn't kick in, driving with the temp almost touching the red. Took the cowling out and it was fucked. Put the Fan in the second hole and attached it all up, but it still doesn't work? Don't really wan't to drive it with it like this..

    Help?

Fan sensor broken? Earth not connected? Wires/connection damaged? Take the + and - wires and touch the battery, if the fan doesnt spin you need a new fan
  3. #3
as above, check to make sure the fan works and then the most common problem is a faulty fan switch
  4. #4
As the above mentioned, ive just bought a new fan switch for mine but havent had a chance to fit it yet. If the fan works it will more than likely be the switch, and i doubt the relay would be the culprit

I might be worrying too much if I suspected a underlying HG problem then. Put my mind at rest for the time being, Il try and splice apart the loom to see if I can attach it to the battery

You wouldnt need to do that, all you need is two pieces of wire and some male clips to fit into the end of the plug (think there called spade connectors?)

Attach the one end of each wire to one of the connectors, slide the connectors into the plug and then touch the other ends to the battery. It doesnt matter if you get them the wrong way round, all that will happen is the fan will spin the opposite way.

Fan works when connecting it to the battery.. Ideas people?

It will more than likely be the fan switch, or something stupid such as the 30A fuse has blown.

thermostat? if it not opening then the hot water not getting back to the rad and fan sensor will not no when to kick in, think that how it works lol

also could need bleeding as a air pocket will stop fan working

Where the hell is the thermostat? Can someone please get me a picture of it in the engine bay.. Please
  11. #11
    you checked the relay?

when my fan didnt come on it was because mine was fooked
  12. #12
    Which Relay?
  13. #13

But if the fan relay was broken surely it wouldn't work if I just clipped the fan wires to the battery?

Gearbox side of the engine bay, you will see this by the head. (You will have a hose going to the top of your rad)

You need to remove the black plastic bit, 2 bolts at the top.......

(excuse the stella boxes, They're for padding/oil absorption )

    Three in total.

Once removed you will be left with this..

And the thermostat is them simply free to remove...

And the part if you require a replacement. Available off the shelf from halfrauds for about 7/8 quid. Even cheaper at a motor Factors.

But you can check a thermostat by throwing it in a pot of water and heating it up to nearly boiling point. By the time the water starts to boil the thermostat should be fully opened.

So check it before replacement if you want.

Just practised on my spare engine, seems like the Thermostat on that is nackered. Not tried on my engine yet, would I need to bleed the whole coolant system after replacing the thermostat?
  22. #22
    Yes you will.
  23. #23
Reckon I could sly it out and replace the thermostat and call my breakdown cover to come and do it for free, I have homestart I think..
  24. #24
Is a piece of piss to do mate. lol
  25. #25

I used them both last week to do mine. First time I'd ever done it myself.

If this works il post the Haribo & Wine Gums tomorrow

    Whats your address?
  28. #28
Hi mate I been having the same problem too. I bled my cooling system and it just started working. I was told three things could cause it; temp sensor, fan switch or thermostat- it's a matter of trial and error, google each fault and you'll build up an idea of what your looking at, I work for the AA so it might be worth using your breakdown cover to get them too diagnose it!

Thermostat changed and bled the system, still not working. Where is the temp sensor? and where is the fan switch?
