    Hi All

Had mot today and failed on 2 bulbs and emissions. had new cat fitted and now passed MOT

Bit concerned about advisory notes on mot - overheating due to fan not working
and blue smoke from exhaust on acceleration.

Is replacing the fan a big job and costly and anybody any ideas about the blue smoke.

Had oil change last week and gearbox oil change today

    Ay help would be appreciated

    Cheers

Blue smoke is usually the engine burning oil so you may have oil getting into the cylinder and could probably do the fan yourself if you have the tools.

so by the sounds of it your engine is slowly on the way out.
the fan is probably not working as the thermo switch might not be working which tells the fan when to turn on.i think its the blue sensor on the rad if im not mistaken? or could even be simple as a fuse.

If oil is getting into the cylinders and burning with the mixture it could mean the piston rings are fried.

Do you have to top it up with oil regularly?

    Not really no lol
It could be a whole host of things but I had a Furio a few years back that was pummeling out blue smoke and using 1litre of oil every few weeks
Ended up scrapping it as it wasnt worth getting it fixed

If you have a decent saxo, say worth over a grand with MOT and low miles etc, it may be worth getting it fixed
Im assuming it would be removing the head, fitting new rings and reassembling.

As I said thou, it may not be that

    Bloody hell

Had the VTR for a week so far had the following done

    Rear Break pads
    Exhaust bent as was catching
    Oil change
    Gearbox oil change
    New cat
    System bled after overheating
    new thermostat
    Locking wheel nuts drilled

Today went over large pothole and bang engine cut out.............fuel cut off and didnt know you could just sort via that little black thing in the engine bay

I have worked out how to solve the rattles- bought a more powerful stereo

    Its a blast

Should sort the fan, it screws into the top right of your radiator. As for the blue smoke, give the car a service with a thick oil and see if it helps? Could be anything like piston rings as mentioned or valve stem seals etc...

I have the same problem with my Mk1 1997, Alot of blue smoke, I was advised it was the valve stem seals. This is due to a life of being raced and rally'd. I gave mine a full service with a oil change too, and used some high performace thick oil to withstand the temperature. Since has been running really well. Another thing you could try is, 'stop smoke' this is a substance like oil, which you add straight into the oil which helps swell up the valves.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Mate,

My smoke turned from blue to white on startup..........put some stop smoke in and then 30 minutes later overheating and pissing water and coolant

Dont know whether this was related to the gunk i put in there

But its back in the garage today

    Will let you know.

I am fearing head gasket problem and possible death of vtr.
