Hillclimb 1400

  1. #1
    Hey,
As some of you may know i'm getting prepped to get into hillclimb soon. My car will be in the under 1400cc n/a fwd class. But the thing that i am curious to know is what kind of cars would be running in the class?
I'm not expecting to be super competitive but am i just going to be surrounded by busa engines? Or will there be some other 1400 low power cars around?

Anybody with personal experience or an actual idea would be best.

This thread would be good for the new motorsport section as a side note.

    Cheers
    Adam

Best bet would be to check the rule book to see what it allows!

You will run in the standard OR modified "road" going class. Thing is you have to watch out with the regs as sometimes you are not allowed to strip your car out, some rules are strict.

Will be up against Renault 5 turbos (allow a turbo as it under 1400 with turbo from factory) novas (gsi 16v engine is quick) 205's etc etc.

You wont see any Busa engines, not in a production class, they stick them in the Jedis (r1 or r6 engines normally) and the Libre cars. And race cars (single seater) upto 1600.

I know what it allows, i spent the last 2 days trawling through the regs. I would like to know from experience what kind of cars are common in the class And how varied the competition is within the class

Cheers colin, Yeah the pro mod class. Wont the gsi's and the 205's be in the over 1600 class?

Well some people sleeve down the TU 16v lump to 1400, and the gsi engine out the corsa goes in the Nova, which iirc is a 1400.

May see some Minis in there, Imps etc.

Thing is, the 1400 is THE most competitive class out there! Same goes with the rallying tbh.

    +1

the 1400 16v TU engine looks very quick from videos I've seen!

How competitive you are will depend on budget, so how deep are your pockets ?!

GREAT!! I can't wait to get out there and get a right good kicking then lol.
The it will just be good fun for the time being then i will get a vts engine and take on the world

Lol... Nothing that brave pills and -60mm lowering springs wont sort out!

    Some of the Corsa/Nova engines are 200bhp + !!!

Just pulled this off an entry list:

    A1

    Peugeot 106 Rallye 1294
    Alpine Renault A110 1397
    MG ZR105 1396
    Peugeot 106 Rallye 1294cc

Another thing that was confusing me in the regs was about fuel sampling. It says That all cars need the facility unless running in the road going production category. Would production modified need fuel sampling?
  12. #12
Bit of a grey area that tbh. I left my Blue book at home tonight lol.

I would imagine is does need a sampling kit, as far as im aware all 2010 logbooked cars need a sampling kit.

So basically if i follow all the msa appendices on your car i should be fine. As i guess that the rally regs are deeper than the pro mod hillclimb ones
  14. #14
Yeah but you could end up spending alot more money lol eg sampling kits are 130 odd quid. However on my Logbook it does say rally/hillclimb/sprints. So I guess the regs are similar.

I suppose it depends on your reasons for entering?

If it's just to have fun, then your speeds/times are only really used by yourself to improve on/aim for. Whereas if you want to be competitive then it'll be expensive as you'll be aiming to beat some well setup/sorted cars !

If it was me, I'd look to get the whole car sorted as best as I could afford (leaving the engine alone). Then see how quick you are, and at that point then can decide the route you want to go engine wise as this'll no doubt affect the class you compete in?

I think it will be a nice positive correlation between time and competition. As time goes on, i will have more money and so will have more to spent on the car and be more competitive. However if i had more money and i saw all types of caterhams etc going up the hill i would just upgrade tbh

I thought turbos added 50% onto engine capacity?

So like a 1litre would be classed as a 1500
  18. #18
The regs for turbo engines are. "Forced induction equivalence 1.4"

Found a nice little nugget about the resleeved 16v engine's.

    "Engine
12.6.1. The engine block must be externally identifiable
as that fitted to the original model or specified option
and it must remain in the same capacity class as the
original car or the manufacturer’s specified option for
    the model and engine
    . Modification to all components
    is permitted.
    as follows:"

What hillclimb series and in what class are you running in? Regulations vary depending on this with many local clubs running there own variations. In so it would be impossible to comment. My old car was built for the old class 1 regs so the engine block, head and gearbox casting where as originally fitted but after that it was relatively free. The body and suspension had to be relatively standard. But you can race in classes where there is nothing and I mean nothing left of an original car. Some people are spending more on there cars then most do on there house

Going to be running with Tunbridge Wells motor club.
