Tyre recommendations fast road/track

  1. #1
Currently running 195/45/15 Toyo proxes 4's
However the load rating is 78 and as grippy as they are there is a lot of flex on hard cornering so to compensate im pumping the tyres up about 3psi extra. However this loses grip and is probably scrubbing my tyres out a bit quicker.

Want to get something with a higher load rating and therefore stiffness but really don't know what to get.

They will be used primarily for the road but also for trackdays like brands on the 17th Dec

Wouldn't mind a 50 profile but as im lowered 40mm this isn't going to work methinks...

toyo r888's are probably best road legal track tyres, but they dont last as long as normal road tyres, arent fantastic in the wet and are quite expensive
  3. #3
They only come in 50 profile too..

I can second that bit about them not lasting long. Last set I had lasted about 3 hours give or take. Some times they don't last that as they do flat spot very easily compared to road rubber. They also pic up punctures a lot more then normal road tyres. Also agree about them not being great in the wet. If you start getting a lot of standing water they are poor. I have a few sets cut in to full wets but then once there warn a bit there not much use for dry or wet.

R888 prices have gone through the roof its mental, so have A048's and the like.

I'm going with some Federal 595 RSR's in 195/50/15, pretty cheap considering they are classed as a semi-slick (£65-£70) a tyre and the reviews say they are very good and last 3 or 4 times as long as R888's. Federal also do a tyre called Federal FZ-201 which is again a semi-slick and are around £90 a tyre. Keep an eye out for Federal as they are an up and coming brand that have already gained recognition in some race leagues becoming the control tyre (in the US). There cheap as chips at the moment for R888 & A048 quality!

You could try Toyo T1R's as well, you can get them from camskill in 195/50/15 for £26 a tyre!! Although they also don't have very strong sidewalls.
  6. #6
Its the sidewall strength im after really as the suspension set up is showing up the tyres lol
  7. #7
Have to keep an ear out for those federals they sound interesting. Got any pics of details of them? I got lucky and found a second hand set of Ao48's but might not be so lucky next time.

Joe ive gone from Toyo TR1s to Goodyear eagle F1's (GSD3's) Found them alot stiffer then the toyos and are also a harder compound as they dont seem to over heat or blister as much on track as they toyos did. Dont seem to have any less grip either. Only downer is they are a little more expensive.
  8. #8
    What size are they? Link?
  9. #9
toyo r1r are meant to be pretty good tyres!
aswell, as the above mentioning Goodyear eagle F1...
but personally id go for pirelli PZR / PZN if your wanting for fast road!

ive ran a few cars with the F1 and changed to the pirelli, and never went back!

    Mine?

    If so 195/45-15

Best price I found for them was elite direct in rainham essex up the A13
  13. #13
There are a few you can try out really:

    Federal 595 RS-R:

    Federal FZ-201

    Hankook RS2: - £50 a tyre from camskill in 195/50/15

    Silverstone FTZ: (limited sizes)

You won't find any 'performance' tyres in 195/45/15 apart from Toyo Proxes etc, all track tyres tend to be in 195/50 or bigger. I know you can get some with low profiles such as Avon ACB10 but you need a mortgage for them!
  14. #14
ive seen those feds before actually but last time I looked no where had them some assumed they wernt out yet. got a link for anywhere that sells them?
  15. #15
T1-R's are better than the proxes 4 - and i had some good ammount of camber on the front wheels due to the coilovers needing topmounts to allign properly, as it understeered so much with the normaly budget tyres, put on T1-R's and all was fine unless you were caning it round corners (you'd get a bit of understeer in the wet)

Was not on a sax though.

Ive just bought a set of Nankang NS2's and have herd they are rated very highly for the price you can get them (£130) But anything will beat R rims with budgets lol
  16. #16
Looks like i'll have to stick with 195/45 for the time being till i can do some research into how i can make 195/50's fit without rubbing, which im sure they will if im down 40mm
  17. #17
nothing wrong with 195/50/15 unless your silly low. Plenty people run 50 profiles on track which are 50mm or even lower. You may get the slight odd rub on track but you would with 45 profiles and you probably wouldn't even notice. I was 25mm and even mine showed signs of the occasional rub, what you expect when throwing it through chicances at high speed and the wheels coming off the ground

Hankook rs-2s are good think they would over heat fairly quickly on a track but they are better than t1-rs imo. Got them on the Civic atm.
All honestly I think you should try federal FZ-201s then let me know how you get on as i was planning to get some when my r888s die off.
  18. #18
Joe, if your silly low with 50 profile,

Take off ALL the arches, all front 2 trims, and rear 2 quater trims, then take a pair of metal cutters and go allong shaving off what you want (an inch or two) leave the holes for the clips there so you can clip everything back on, or you can bond it back on

This is the trick with putting 17's on the cars - as its hidden with the arch trims, because being 40mm on 17's is like being down 60mm on 15"'s, but 45 profile you will feel the road allot more and more positive feedback.
  19. #19
fark taking arches out just let it wear through naturally ftw.
  20. #20
hah, 2 sets of tyres and a wallet of butterflies!
  21. #21
fo sho lol tbf my wear was very minimal, could see when taking track wheels off where it had rubbed on the inner arch. I have seen wheels rub on the inner arch as standard. Rarely would i see signs it had caught on the arch liners.

It was at the ring the rears had rubbed on the rear arch liners.
  22. #22
I think im going to stick with 45 profile for the sake of it being easier and cheaper for the time being.

My back tyres with proxes 4 have plenty of tread left so either i go back to them till they all need doing or was looking at these..

    http://camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m53b0s92p3641

Im not made of money at the moment and i've just bought a kam racing/supersprint system £300 so got to be careful with the pennies at the mo.

Where can i get me some of them Federals? They look good and like you said R888 are ridiculous now!
  24. #24
You can buy them from tyretraders, quite cheap from there, especially the fz-201's http://www.tyretraders.com/tyresearc...l&tyreType=All

I'm going to be buying a set of either tyre in the next month or so ready for next year!
  25. #25
What you reckon then Federals are like in the wet? Dont fancy spending nearly 200 a corner for proper wets! lol.

thats where i was going to get some, let me know how you get on, although al be getting some early next year to.

They are used as the set tyre in some championships so should be decent.
  27. #27
does anyone have any more info on them fz-201? i.e. treadwear? and the sidewall stiffness?
  28. #28
Guessing its fairly stiff mate as its rated at 82 haven't seen higher than that for 15 inch 'saxo' tyres as yet...
  29. #29
yer, i saw that after man, they do look good, might just get them as they are cheaper than 888's to see can only try them, also t1r are not that good when really give them stick... they seem to give up fast.

Yep totally agree. Although the T1R is meant to be a 'performance road tyre', its not made for track work really. Where as these Federal ones supposedly are.

However there doesn't seem to be many reviews of them in the UK as 1) They aren't a major brand over here and 2) they are relatively new. Also people usually stick with the big brands (Avon, Yokohama, Toyo etc) but they are so expensive, its surely worth a go at giving the 'lesser' priced ones a go. The reviews in America even suggest they are better than R888's!
  31. #31
yer them 201;s is the ones i will be going for, i think they have to be worth ago.

yer t1r's are ok, very weak sidewalls really, but seem to go off fast after a few laps.

so i think i am going to try them as i was going to buy the 888's but i really didnt want to at the price they are at,
  32. #32
How much are you lowered by at the minute Andy? Im tempted to get these as well but don't want dramas with MOT's rubbing etc etc
  33. #33
well for a start the 201's would be on all the time, i have some pro race 1.2 just for track days, and then some alloys for normal road use, which will be very limited though. trailing to track days.

well i am unsure as i am using coilover on the front and the rear was set about 25-30mm, but with 22mm bars so not spot on that, i would say 30mm lowest really, not really low at all, works alot better for the driveshafts aswell.

should be ok, i use 50 profiles when 50mm down on apex kit. on 15 inch alloys.
  34. #34
I'm 40mm down and have 195/50/15 in Toyo T1R and some very worn A048's in this size. No rubbing at all if you have the correct offset wheels, if it doesn't rub with 45's then it won't with 50's apart from on full lock. When cornering hard with the A048's at Anglesey and Oulton, I had slight rubbing on the rear arch liners but nothing major at all.

My front arch liners are pretty worn in a certain spot due to the rubbing on full lock (I need full lock to get out my drive). Passed its MOT fine - and it wasn't a dodgy one. You will be fine with 50 profiles mate, nothing to worry about at all!
  35. #35
try camskill for cheep tyres, the do toyo, mitchellin etc, you can get proxy 4's for about £45-50 a tyre.
  36. #36
we know camskill are cheap, but not always for what people want, i will get the t1r from them from my road alloys,
  37. #37
these 201's do look a good tyre, will be nice to hear some feedback on them. its nice to see some more tack tyres available.

i had t1r's on for my first track day and persoanlly thought they were great... i obv wasnt going quick enough for them to go off lol

So would be okay with vts rims?
  39. #39
I can't guarantee, but yes you should be fine. You might have a little bit of rubbing but if you have any common sense its really easy to stop. To get any proper decent tyres you need 50 profiles anyway, may as well take the plunge now mate
  40. #40
How easy is it to stop the rubbing? There must be a way as in a professional solution to this. Im the biggest technical mong there is i can strip my car and fit an induction kit but thats about it lol
  41. #41
think i am going to order these 201 next month pay
  42. #42
Keep us posted on what you think mate

As once I have chewed through these ao48s I may be in the market for some
  43. #43
will not be used til mid next year though, but i bet the price will get higher soon.
  44. #44
I think I may also go for the FZ-201's but I'm still making my mind up - FZ-201's of 595RS-R. I'm still unsure if the Fz's are actually road legal or not, it does state 'not for road use' or something along them lines but also says they are E marked etc?

I will be buying some though, next month maybe
  45. #45
fz-201's are road legal according to the federal site, although does say for competition use. If they are E marked then you should be fine.
Defo go for them over the 595rs-r's.
  46. #46
yer well dnt matter to me as they will just be on track alloys not on my road alloys,
  47. #47
would get full slicks but not all track days allow full slicks.
  48. #48
I would say 95% of them allow full slicks, as long as you have a cage and adequate suspension. This is just for safety reasons as slicks can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Mine will mostly be used for track but I want to give them a try on the road too, my toyos can take a back seat for a bit lol. I need to get my wheels refurbed first though, all the paint has cracked where the wheels got so hot on track
  49. #49
yer i know, i have both, but sometimes that dont, depends on what sort of session you are on, so not worth the risk, just get semi slicks for now, they should be ok on the road, but it not much of a factor for me.

    Amazing tyres in dry:

    Toyo R888
    Toyo T1R
Yokohama Parada Spec 2 (Not good in the wet - I speak from crash experience)

    Amazing tyres in the wet:

    Uniroyal rainsport 2.

    Simples
  51. #51
And cheap in 195 50 15 form from Demon tweeks, also i recommend Nitrogen filled wheels! Lasts longer and seems to handle alot better.

Also i think 195 45 is the same price as above.
  52. #52
How long does that last for? I probably have to refill my tyres with air once a week.

we know 88 are good, but are some expensive, and treadwear is very high, it a 50, so for the price really not worth it, would most likly wear them out with a good session,

as they are like 400+ maybe more, for a set, that why i am looking at different option.
  55. #55
    ggodyear eagle f1 gsd3
  56. #56
yer they are more fast road trye, i am looking more at track tryes,
  57. #57
yer- i havent used the gsd3 on track- my friend always rants about A048's but said the wear on them is very quick. fz 201 look interesting with the tread pattern
