MEGASQUIRT ecu (to fit my vtr)

looking for thoughts and opininons on these from ppl in the know, have been reading up on themfor a while now and am serioulsy considering building up my own megasquirt v2,

its for turbo on a 98bhp vtr, as there is no pred and all the other ecus are out of my price range, what are your opinions?, please only post if you have experience or knowledge on the subject, its definatley capable enough for my needs, very reasonabley priced in kit form, doesnt appear to be too hard to build up, theres lots of info about on them(lots of help forums), most can map them, and lots of diff add ons should i ever want more

i know gixxa was planning on making his own up a while ago so any input from him may help me... if your reading this mate

I have only ever made a megajolt but the same thing applies really. Making one your self can be a little tricky and it many not always be the cheap option. Though saying that you can buy part built ones these days that make life a lot simpler and a lot less likely to have literally turned your money it to some nasty smelling smoke. Biggest issue after making the thing is actually wiring it in to the car. If your happy with electronics and engine management systems I say give it a go as its a great project and would love to see the project thread. If your after purely cheap then you may consider just getting your standard ECU mapped. I don't know what the guys can do with the 3 plug but its probably worth investigating before embarking on such a big and potentially costly project.

cheers for the input mate, been looking around alot and it really doesnt look that hard putting one togther, ive browsed through lots of guides(there are some very intensive ones) looking at it through what ive seen so far, spec'ing the ecu to my needs seems striaght forward enough, the wiring into the car may be slighlty trickier, but from what ive read it shouldnt be too hard to wire it round the standard loom going off a 3 plug pin out diagram, and engine loom diagram. im fairly competant with a soldering iron, know the basics-moderate with electronics, and my dad is a qualified electrician, so capable help would be pretty close by, ive even seen lots of fitting/instalation diagrams and vids, it seems megaquirt and all related products has come on massivley in the last few years, just not so much in the uk, seems more go for an off the shelf modelrather then getting amongst it so to speak

have you thought about converting a 16v loom to run on your engine so it can take a pred??
  5. #5
how hard mate? Could be an option, would probs work out slightly more costly but a damn site easier to do?
  6. #6
Andy you need to get s single plug 16 loom from a digi dial car on a swap over year mate that will be plug n play then mate. Jim Bob is doing the same thing but its finding a loom thats the problem will be more than worth it long term if I am honest
  7. #7
how much dif is the loom fitting wise? I imagine ill have to cut most of the plugs of and solder them on off the 8v loom?
  8. #8
thats made me think? Gav how are you running predator on an 8v? Have done this with an s loom?
  9. #9
no mate on the single plug quikies like mine the ecu plug is the same so mine just slotted right in.

In yours and Jims situation using the 16v single plug loom from a digi dial car everything is plug and play changing plugs 2 at most the common ones are the same

all single plug quicksilvers like that? Suppose failing finding vts i could splice a quickie loom in? Crossover is 2000 yeah
  11. #11
my loom is the old style one with small plug on the driver inner wing and as far as I know mate all single plug quikies are like that, crossover is early 2000
  12. #12
cool, what year is the quickie? 98? cant imagine ill find a crossover loom tbh, but sall have a ok see, cheers for the help tus far ppl, am trying to sort out yoursteelie also dude, just need to sort a day someone can be in for the courier, andy
  13. #13
yeah no worries like I say keep eye out for a 16v cross loom be easier
  14. #14
MAY have found one!! but im not getting my hopes up, lad is possibley lying to get a sale, anyone know what the multiplug looks like? with pics if poss
  15. #15
get him to take a pic of the multiplug on the inner wing and post it up
  16. #16
i think its just a standard mk1 loom, sais it has 2 plugs, one with lots of wire one with a few, but all sax looms have this dont they?
  17. #17
    sounds like a gti one
  18. #18
shouldnt be too much fook on just wiring a standard vts loom into my loom, trouble is i wont have an ecu to try it and make sue its all running ok and wired in properly, which will make things very hard to faut find if andy travelled all the way up to map it ......
