urgent . help please. crank pully?

hi i had an alternator belt fitted the other week and i said it was a sqeaking noise on startup. i got into car after gym today and it was squaking like hell and it smoked alot so i turned it off. opened the bonnet up and got my mate to start it. the crank pully at the bottom of the engine which connects to alternator pully looks like its not running true. is there two seperate pullys together and there binding due to incorrect tension of timing belt by garage.?????

driving me insane as all i do is spend money on the car. any help would be greatly appreciated.

16V engine? If so, the standard crank pulley has a rubber centre which often breaks away from the metal of the pulley - basically, the crank pulley ends up falling off.

It's nearly £100 for a new, standard one from Citroen. GMC sell an aluminium one with no rubber, will be cheaper and a fair bit lighter too.

so it could of broke away and its slipping and smoking. because when it starts it squeaks then you rev it a lil bit and it sounds like it snags then revs drop then its ok. you reckon i can try and pin it on the garage as they touched it last?

If the crank pulley is wobbling around while the engine running, it's definitely the problem. I'd avoid driving the car as alternator won't be charging the battery when the crank pulley finally comes off.

You could always take it back and see what they say, but you might struggle for them to cough up for a new crank pulley.

obviously one from a breakers yard wont have any garuntee so there is always the risk that same same thing could happen in a few months best thing is as above solid one from gmc or ebay maybe

Could try one from a scrap yard or the for sale forums on here, but chances are it'll fail in the same way at a later date.

An aluminium one is what I'd get.
