Performance upgrades

  1. #1
Now I finally got myself a job.Im looking into starting a project,

I dont know weather to get another saxo, 106 or a corsa, which car would be te best to start a project on.

But just wondering what would be the best performance upgrades and in which order to do them,
Also looking not just turbos, nos etc... Things like cams remaps etc..and a guy from my local garages saying upgrade the clutch, flywheel, electric fans and also an electric fuel pump etc will they also help performance.. Will smaller alloys and tires also help with getting the max out of the car..

    Thanks

get a saxo vts ... full exhaust system ,good indcution system, cam and remap , youl see good gains .... for a bit more money you could go the throttle body route or even the turbo/suspercharger route / all about your budget mate

106 GTi/ saxo vts will be the best starting point for a fast road car

    Good start which will fit in with a decent budget...don't buy cheap parts though;
    Good induction kit
    4-2-1 mani
    Saxsport / kam racing system
    Cams
    Re-map

    Then look at:
    Lightened and balanced flywheel
    Fast road clutch
    Head work.

Then maybe look into bodies or a turbo?
If you are running big boost on turbo then forged internals will be something else you will need to look at.

Don't forget you need to uprate brakes and suspension setup to keep handling and stopping performance in line with speed.
No point having a fast vts in a straight line that is all over the place through the bends

You need to really give an indication of the budget you have mate

Thanks for the replys thinking around 2-3k but not all in one go. Over maybe 1-3 years I wanna build a saxo or 106 and try keep the car for long time..

Depends what you want the car for? A c20let corsa would be much quicker than a cammed vts, but a well spec'd saxo would pass it in the corners.

You using the car as your daily? Track car or just a road rocket? Budget?

It would be normal road use. But I would like to keep the car for a very long time and want it be my project, I want to TRY! And build I well spec car not body mods but just performance etc mods.. Something thats fast but i dont want it be SUPER fast,

    Good induction kit
    4-2-1 mani
    Saxsport / kam racing system
    Cams
    Re-map

job done should see you 150-160bhp mate

    Just go for the 1st step I put then;
    Good induction kit
    4-2-1 mani
    Saxsport / kam racing system
    Cams
    Re-map

Drive it for a while then maybe do the lightened and balanced flywheel and uprated clutch if you get bored, then headwork.
Wouldn't go turbo or bodies on your budget if its an everyday car aswell mate

If your doing the engine mods don't forget that you'll also need to budget in your suspension upgrades to keep the handling in check.

Yes was going ask that next what would be the best suspension kit to get,

I really dont want cut corners this time around.. I just want something to do/build. I spent all my money on stupid things and I want something to show for it. So going try and take on a project.. Etc...

One little bit of advice from someone that knows..
Make a plan stick to the plan and don't buy parts for the sake of it.
Decide what you want, look at other people's saxo's hell even drive other people's saxo's so when you make a decision your happy with it and don't do what countless people on here (like me) do and buy the same thing 2 maybe 3 times..

yeah very good plan. Thanks for the advice..

    quick question?

If I was to get the saxo remaped, cammed, would it be best to get a performance exhaust or would the standard backbox with de-cat be ok,

As want keep the saxo looking standard, but changing engine mods etc...
  17. #17
Id get a new full system. The 3" road Saxsport system looks very similar to OEM, sounds awsome and very good quality

I should think a standard exhaust would restrict it quite badly if it was cammed, dont quote me on that though, ive never read about anyone doing it on here.

    Look at my post #3.

Saxsport / kam system ...there is a reason for this

The saxsport is either a 2" or 3" tip depending what you want.
So it doesn't really look much different than standard. Just sounds a hell of a lot nicer tbh

    Standard exhaust is VERY restrictive.

Most people get the supersprint center section and a piper backbox from KamRacing. You get a discount through here too i think. Then get on ebay and find a raceland manifold. for around £300 you'll then have an awesome full system that sounds great and won't restrict them exhaust gases at all. This is the type of system most people have on here and works great no matter how far you take the engine mods.

I'd then get either a BMC air filter or one of the dual cone green filters again both from KamRacing. I have a BMC and the above exhaust fitted to my 1998 VTR. It was rolling roaded at 100BHP. so there's your first 10 extra hp. Then it's on to other bits like having the head worked. cams fitted. standalone ECU. all that lot, I don't know much about them yet but there's LOADS of info on here if you use the search button to find answers, if there aren't any then just ask... Main thing, is read as much as you can on here... there's not much that hasn't been done already so someone will know what to do or how to help you.

    Thanks for the advice guys

An exhaust system will not give you another 10hp. 5hp is a good result from this and an induction kit. And if you are planning on going turbo or supercharging then this system will be too small at 2" and will only suffuice up to about 200hp.

    After having a little think.
Is it possible to get 150-160bhp without turboing the car,

Yes - Will probably need throttle bodies to get to 160. But you could get to 150 with breathing mods, cams and a good remap or standalone ECU.
