Fuel For High Compression Engines

  1. #1
Just wondering what are peoples thoughts on what fuel to run in a high compression engine. Obviously high octane means you can advance ignition more etc and more of a "bang".

I know in my old mans drag bike we run something called C16 which is 116 octane. Anything less and it doesnt run very well at all, that has a c/r of around 15:1.

From the pump, 97 or 99 *should* be widely available.

    Thoughts?

go to oyur local airport or flying club and buy AVGAS 115 octane and not too expensive ,it has road tax on it ,so no problem with using it on the road.

Ive heard of AVGAS being used in a few race engines.

Would that be OTT for a Saxo engine?

Is there an actual definitive advantage to running a high octance fuel, pump 97/99 or barrell on a 1600 high comp engine?

High octane allows you to run higher compression , greater ignition advance, greater boost and/or higher operating temperatures. So can potentially can offer greater performance if the engine is built to take advantage of it.

What are they flying from your local field spitfires? All I could ever get was good old 100 low lead.

Thing is round here, the best fuel we have is Esso, so need to run something decent. So whos to say 99 Tesco is better "quality" then Esso 97? I dabble in work for the Petrochemical industry so i know what gos into the differing "manufacturing" fuels.

id have it mapped on the lower grade fuel myself if its a road car

It will be strictly a rally car Ry

You may wish to check the regulations your running to as generally rallying has restrictions on allowed fuels.

Will have a gander in the blue book, but im sure it would be any commercially available fuel.
