Gearbox leak problem Hole in the box :(

  1. #1
Had abit of bad luck with the car yesterday which after not using for 6 weeks and only taxing it today, all gearbox oil leaked out for some reason, mate reckons it maybe gearbox off job Leaked out from bell housing i think but not had proper look yet but going to get it jacked up today.

Any ideas why its just leaked out???
  2. #2
yeh you wana have a look if its come from the bell housing- clutch could have been contaminted!

Had a look today and it seems to be coming from bell housing. I filled box up with half a litre and it doesnt seem to be coming from the driveshafts so think box is going to have to come off.

    Drive shaft bearing /seal.

Pull the drain plug for bits...

    Just been there....

100% box off if leaking badly, and it isn't the driveshaft seals.

Not too hard a job to split the casing and re-seal it. Probably around £25 in consumables/parts from Citroen to do the job.

the smell should give it away !

Just another thought - you haven't overfilled the gearbox and it's spitting it out the breather for some reason and dripping down making it look like it's leaking ?

if its coming out of the bellhousing then surely its more likely to be the gearbox input seal?
  9. #9
I presume he means in-between the end casing and bellhousing case?

If it is from the end that's engine side of the bellhousing then I'd agree with it being input shaft seal - around £12 for a new one from Citroen and 2mins to replace with the box off the car

if it is the input seal i urge you to follow raunchz advice, the non genuine ones you can get and press into the guide sleeve are a very poor fit, i used one last week and never again!

If it's one thing I learnt playing with saxo's for a good 5years+ - it's to use Citroen parts as much as possible/you can afford

Non-gen parts can end up causing you more trouble!
  12. #12
wait until you experience non-gen land rover parts lol, cheap for a reason springs to mind

Are driveshaft seals hard to replace on vtr box?

not really, undo bottom balljoint, pull shaft out of box, replace seal, refit shaft, top up oil, drive away

If the drive shaft bearing has gone...your transmission drain plug may look like this...

is this on the side on the gear box??
  17. #17

Yes its coming out from the bellhousing, i thought it may have been leaking from where driveshaft fits into at back and dripped down but nope. So it should just be input shaft seal? may have too get one ordered from citroen later then.

Also im guessing the seal for the rallye box would be the same as any other MA box?

So it's leaking from where the clutch is? As opposed to the leak being inbetween the two halves of the gearbox casing?

Yeh, they are the same - around £12 from memory.
  21. #21
Ye its from where it joins to the engine. I went to citroen earlier and said theres 2 different ones and are different prices. One was about £6.50+vat other £10+vat

  23. #23
if the drain plug looks like this then the box needs splitting and a bit of investigation carrying out, could be any bearing/broken gear/synchro thats stuck to it
  24. #24
Theres a small hole on the inside part of box, so for the time being going to get a vtr box for £20 off someone i know just to get car on road again.

Ive got a vtr box to go on for time being which should hopefully be going on tomorrow. Then will get a new casing and rebuild for this rallye box.

if you're struggling for a case i've got a few from boxes that were beyond re-conning here

Ouch, I'd say try and weld it up but looks like something inside has come out.

Its got a Quaife diff in it?

Ye it has, i moved car since had it towed back by rac but put some oil in before hand and it seemed ok. Dont think oils got on clutch anyway.

looks like a diff bearing went by the way the whole diff has moved sideways, i spy with my little eye....planet gears!!!
  33. #33
Lol, I see your final drive
  34. #34
Went to go see the gearbox today in bits. It was the driveshaft input bearing that had collapsed. The diffs fine but need a synchro hub 1st, detent spring assembly parts, input shaft bearing x2, lay shaft bearing x2. Where would be best place to buy from?
  35. #35
bearings on ebay but if you want quality ones then get the old ones down to a bearing stockist and ask for them to match them up to SKF or Timkens bearings, usually work out cheaper and a lot better bearing
