Strange Problem

   right recent done a vts engine conversion, everything been running fine
   then this last week my alternator belt started squeaking, fitted a new one when did conversion, its all tighend up etc
   
   but now i have another strange noise on start up, when the alertator belt squeaks theres another strange noise coming from the engine bay, only does it when stood still for the 1st 5-10 mins, makes like a grinding noise, say if im sat still and turn the wheel it will do it,
   
   any ideas?

   is the power steering fluid topped up ?

   yes power steering fluid full
   
   after driving for a min mins it will stop

   Does the grinding and squeaking happen at the same time??? It is possible that you have a badly worn alternator rotor bearing. Slacken off the alternator and spin it by hand. It could also be a idler pulley that the belt rides on. Again with so many of these funny sound reports, unless it can be heard it is simply guess work based on how you report your problem.
   
   By using a long screw driver or even a piece of wood (not as good) as a stethoscope, put the screwdriver blade on the suspect area and put the handle to your ear. It is very surprising how much you car hear that you wouldn'y normally. I have used this method various times to diagnose water pump bearings, bearing knocks etc....it is quite good. Get a friend to turn the wheel etc whilst you do it.

   sounds like alternator, put a tiny bit of oil on the inside of the belt to stop squeaking. yeah, use a 'stethoscope', but a piece of old hosepipe is usually the best

   when it does the noise on start up, my dials dim, if i rev become brighter, then when enough charge doesnt do it, so thinking it alterntor until theres enough charger (after ive drove for 10 mins)

   well buy a new belt which will cost a couple of quid, if its not that then change the unit yeah

    bought a new belt about a month ago
