Re spraying grill problem

  1. #1
Hi ive just been out to spray my grill with primer. I did 3 or 4 thin coats and sanded when i needed 2 i ended up nearly using a can doubt if this is normal anyway it seems to show like little bits on the bottom of it kinda black bits. There seems to be plently of primer on the grill but i can see the original black only very very slighty on it. Other then that theres no marks or anything. I was just wondering if this is a problem or should i just lightly sand it when i come to painting it red.

Primer doesn't usualy feel that smooth but then agen ive never described it as 'really rough', also 3-4 thin coats shouldnt be anywhere near a full can i did my rocker cover, front gill and all 4 vtr alloys with 2 and a half cans (being generous with my coats)

So what do you think I'm doin wrong then. Am I sprayin to far away if I'm using way to much. I got through a can and it only just covered the whole grill. Do I need to be closer just not 2 close because of over spray. ???

If you spray too far away the paint can begin to dry before it hits the surface giving you a feel just like you have fine sand trapped in it.

naming the actuali grit of the sand paper wud be help full, no less then 320 shud be used on primer, also if its a plastic grill you would need plastic primer or be no good with just genrel gray primer

You really do need to use a plastic primer. This primer etches into the surface and provides a good key for the finishing paint. If you use 'normal' primer it has a tendency to flake off. Plastic expands amd contracts at quite a rate so the correct primer is essential.
