K&N cleaning on the cheap

  1. #1
Got a K&N filter which is due a clean fairly soon. I've bought the official cleaning kits in the past, so have enough spray oil left over to re-oil the filter.

Does anyone know what the 'cleaning fluid' actually is? Would something like paraffin do a similar job?

    Cheers

a rep from k&n told me once that the best way to clean them is to put them in the dish washer as it gets rid of all the shite from the fiter and gives you a good clean surface to apply the filter oil to always worked fine for me and looks like a brand new filter every time i do it. dosnt take long to dry eitha.

Just soak it in petrol, only time I've cleaned a filter I soaked in petrol for a wee bit.

I've used petrol then applied some 2 stroke oil to the outside before

Paraffin, gunk, jizer....any degreaser should do. Petrol works but not the safest thing to be messing with. I find Jizer is the best as it is water based and doesn't stink plus breaks down the old filter oil easily. Wash the filter finally with lots of clean water and allow it to dry then re-oil.

A tip...use a bio-degradable off-road motorbike filter oil. No-Toil is very good and the filters are so much easier to clean.

i boiled mine in a saucepan, did the trick, and didnt remove too much of the oil, just make sure its 100% dry before refitting

The most important task is to re-oil with a proper filter oil as otherwise you have no protection against dirt. The cotton filter is only a medium to hold the oil in the airflow, and does not catch dirt on its own.
