No 5th gear?

I was driving my Saxo earlier on today and noticed a slight crunch where 5th gear was concernd, then a bit later I put it into neutral to coast to the end of the road, then went to put it back into gear and all I could select was 5? Pulled the car over, managed to get it into second gear to pull away, then it came back into life, just with no 5th gear?

Could this be a linkage/selector problem? There are no whines or oil coming from the gearbox, and it's a fully rebuilt one with a brand new clutch that is now six months old? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks guys.

sounds like your selecter fork has gone mate........

By gone what do you mean? Is it easy to replace? Is that the one situated at the underside of the engine bay? How much are these to buy? God I hate Saxo's.

Are you managing to get the gear stick into the correct position for the gear? Your first port of call should be to inspect the shorter linkages to ensure that they are not that worn that the gear is just not selecting.

Selector fork???? I am assuming reference is made to the gear selector forks within the gearbox. From what you describe it is unlikely to be the selectors as once these go you tend to loose said gears completely or you have instances of the car throwing out of gear. A bent selector prevents total selection of a gear on the respective shaft and you end up with grating gears or partial engagement. If they are damaged, replacement box or overhaul.

    Check the linkages!!!
