Hello everyone. Help with MOT advisories?

Hey guys. New owner here of a 1999 East Coast. Just been taxing and decided to look at last years MOT for anything and came across a number of advisories.

Rear pipe exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2a)
Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm has slight play in ball joint (2.4.G.3)
Both rear Service brake Your vehicle has only just met the required brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair (3.7.A.9)
H/b lever high advise to adjust

So was wondering if any of these are simple jobs (perhaps the handbrake) I can do myself. Otherwise if anyone would know of the cost of repair. Basically any help would be appreciated.

Needs a quick respray too it seems

Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm has slight play in ball joint (2.4.G.3) << Had my mot a few days ago mate and this was a fail for having excessive play in the ball joint. If you want to fix it buy a new lower arm one cost me 39 quid its a bit dearer than just replacing the ball joint.. but its meant to be a b*stard changing the ball joints on them.

Both rear Service brake Your vehicle has only just met the required brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair (3.7.A.9) <<

Have you had a look at the brake pads ? Maybe a bit worn down and thier 13 quid for a new set.

If its a small hole in the exhaust just try some exhaust paste ? Not too sure on this so other folk on here can probably help with this

    Cheers

£39 isn't so bad. Had the same problem with my old bmw and it cost a fair bit more. I'll talk to local garage about that part I reckon.

Also cheap! I'm impressed. I'll have a look at the exhaust later for any holes. It's a big bore exhaust and very noisy so I wouldn't mind replacing that anyway.

    Thanks for the info

Rear pipe exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2a)

this is a hole some were, listen were its coming from and then pop under there with a exhaust bandage and wrap it around - cost £5 and its a simple fix

Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm has slight play in ball joint (2.4.G.3)
bought a new pinch bolt that tightens the ball joint up, as the hubs are known to wear on a saxo, i did this and it cost me £1.95
a new nut and bolt and tighten it up as tight as it can go an its a good 1 or at teh worst a new wishbone - £30-£40

Both rear Service brake Your vehicle has only just met the required brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair (3.7.A.9)

this sounds like the rear pads are below 1.3mm left on them, simple job £12-£15

H/b lever high advise to adjust
once rear pads are fitted this will not be as high, but if still high simple adjust under-neath or by the side of the handbrake - 10mm bolt u think

easy work and should be done wiuth in 1 day and cost no more then £60 and that the biggest bill lol with out fitting tho,

Rear brakes on a 1.1 Eastcoast will be drum brakes with shoes.

Cheers for the indepth answer. I'll check out the exhaust bandage after work and see if i'm up to fixing the ball joint problem myself. Would it involve taking wheel off or just jacking the car up?

I've never really done much work with cars, but i try to give it a go. Is replacing the brake pads a home job dya reckon?

Cheers. A step by step would be awesome but I'll have a look next time I'm home and let you know about the brakes.
