Dodgy stuff/general queries... how?

This is in no way what i plan to do, or what any of you should be doing. For educational purposes only

    Just a few queries.

    1) How do mechanics get around doing dodgy M.OT's?
For example, how can they get away with passing a car that fails on something, e.g emmisions, brakes etc.

    2) Say mileage is on 100,000, is it possible to just put it down to 40,000 or whatever you wanted.

    3) If the answer to number 2) is yes, can you do it manully or would you have to buy new clocks.

    4) Mobile speed cameras/normal ones - Saw one today and went past it doing below the speed limit - for example, say the machine failed and flashed, what would happen? Could i prove my innocence?

    5) Can air freshners really fail an MOT, or is that just a myth?

    Cheers,
    Tom

Use a different car for that part of the test

    2) Say mileage is on 100,000, is it possible to just put it down to 40,000 or whatever you wanted.

    Yes

On mk2's the mileage can be adjusted yes

    4) Mobile speed cameras/normal ones - Saw one today and went past it doing below the speed limit - for example, say the machine failed and flashed, what would happen? Could i prove my innocence?

Yes, as the camera takes two pictures, showing the time & distance covered between the two pictures so that your speed can be calculated

    5) Can air freshners really fail an MOT, or is that just a myth?

Depends how much of a cunt the tester is tbh, the place where I get mine done just tuck them over the top of the rear view mirror.

    Cheers,

    1. Yes it can be done.

    2. It can be altered but by someone with the kit to do it.

    3. New clocks or recode old.

    4. Unless dozens more on the same day complained which made confirm there could have been any issue you will not have a chance.

    5. If an air freshener is dangling from you mirror and obscuring your view, yes. You can even been pulled over for it.

further to question 2, the mileage is clocked by DVLA on the MOT. You need to keep your old clocks and explain why the change if ever asked. It is an offence to clock so if you are asked why, make sure you have a very good reason.

Doesn't mean the clocks get re-set.

My old man's 406 has 245k on the clock, engine died, had a new one put in it, clocks don't get changed to reflect new miles.

Clocks follow shell mileage, the only time that should change is if you have faulty clocks that needed replacing, thus you would show lower miles.
