If I wanted to fit larger pistons to my engine how would I go about it? Im assuming I would have to get the sleeves machined out? Would this drastically weaken them?
Fitting larger pistons to a 16v

#2yes they would need machining out and yes it does weaken it but it really depends on how much bigger you go over size wise, the bigger you go the more you weaken it as the inner walls get closer together
-
#3dnt have sleeves, they standard bore size is 78.5mm, biggest size is 80mm pistons, all you got to get someone to re=bore the bores to the correct size,
-
#4I'm pretty sure someone in Europe has fitted 81mm pistons, although there would be VERY little material left in-between the bores !!
Not sure about the reliability of the engine, plus I think he was NA -
#5In that case, il probably need to have the block rebored if I fit new pistons anyway. Would it be worth going a bit bigger (79mm ish) or will it weaken the block too much to run a decent amount of boost safely?

#6You'll need to get a good quality machinist to hone your block even if fitting standard size new pistons and rings.Quote:In that case, il probably need to have the block rebored if I fit new pistons anyway. The quality of the honing is VERY important.
How longs a piece of string about max piston size with boost, I personally wouldn't like to run past 79mm pistons with boost, but that's just me - I've not tried different pistons sizes and boost levels and seen which setup is the most reliable so can't give you a set answer.
You going for forged pistons i'm guessing? -
#7Are you after a few extra CC to help spin a turbo up?
-
#8Yeah I will be running forged pistons and rods ross. If its going to be done, may as well do it right. Any suggestions where to get the work done?
-
#9I've only used a local place to me in Bournemouth for head skimming, not got any honing done.
Could give GMC a try, as they sell the rods and pistons, and will have a local machine shop that they get all their work done? or Atspeed?
Or pm sandy309 on here as he is a very well respected engine builder, so if you're doing it right he might be worth a try? -
#10Ok cheers for the help mateQuote:I've only used a local place to me in Bournemouth for head skimming, not got any honing done.

#1279mm is best compromise
most people can,t be bothered having the block bored so fit std size new pistons to worn bores --and end up with a bit oil consumption .
if you looking for a set of 79mm wo0sner pistons
for a good price on some brand new ones
send a PM to paulsupervts84 on the ssc forum
I also have a set of same pistons 79mm turbo type ,which are perfect and have run for a very short time in my s/c car -- £250
removed only becauseI was doing a specific test on my own car -
#13john i would be very interested in these
money waiting! -
#14I have got a brand new set of 78.9mm wossner low comp pistons if anyone is intersted i have put them on ebay as i have very little interst the link ishttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...STRK:MESELX:IT

#15I saw them mate, your set is what Got me thinking about fitting larger ones tbh. I didn't pm you about them as im still getting quotes to have the block bored out
-
#16gmc i will 1000000% take them
-
#18if anyone is intersted in the pistons you got 16 hours left to get you bids in
-
#19thought these engine use wet liners or is it the smaller size 1..4 downwards etc...?
-
#21the new link to my pistons on ebay is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...STRK:MESELX:IT they end today
