sounds as if its not holding charge do you have a recharger if so stick it on for couple of hours give it a turn over then wait a few hours and try again if it wont start at any point you need a new battery

+1 exactely what id suggest but most probs doesnt hold charge. Has the battery been replaced by the previous owner? if so their is problem and its not the battery but if not then yeah wear and tear battery will need replacing. Yuo can but a battery and alt tester from Maplins for £5 worth getting as its always there for future purpose

Good luck with your course mate will come in very handy for future mechanical problems that you can sort yourself. Unlike me i feel like blowing my car up cos till cant get to the peoblem of it. But electrics in a car is completely differant to general mechanics thats why you have inderpendant auto sparkey who do that only. I have a greater interest in the electrical side of cars not the mechanical lol

if your battery isnt getting charged, then i would also looking into the alternator. get your battery checked out first, then have a look into the alternator.

Get a multimeter and check the voltage of the battery, a normal fully charged battery produces 12.6 volts the resting voltage is normally between 11-11.5 volts so if its working it should produce somewhere between that. Under that and it wont or will struggle to start. so then you can assume its either the battery or the alternator.
if you have a battery charger then charge it overnight then check the voltage if its back to normal then hook it back upto the car and start the engine, leave for a few minutes then check the voltage again, if the voltage has fallen then the alternator wont be charging the battery or even if it reads over 14.5 volts then alternator will be overcharging.
