Making the Saxo more economical

  1. #1
Having had my 1.1i Saxo for a short time, I'm now wanting to keep it running on the economical side of the running budget.

I know I could rip out seats, etc - but I'm looking to keep the car as a practical run around with all chairs. I'm just wondering if a simple air and oil filter change would be worth my time and expense? Or is there a basic guide to make the car run less richer, so it guzzles less fuel?

On a full tank I got around 450 miles before the orange fuel light came on. Is this average/good/poor?

spark plugs, oil filter, oil, air filter, brakes, general services and keeping the engine maintained will increase the mpg, but over the years the mpg will drop due to the age.

450 is pretty good tbh mate, im averaging about 400 to a tank from mine, tbh 450 is the best your likely to see as the 1.1 is better suited to town driving which isnt great due to the stop start nature of towns, on the motorway (where mine does all its miles) its out of its depth really and always working hard to keep up with traffic at 70-80

450 is about right to be honest?

My 1.1 does between 450 - 500 on a tank, but that is a lot of motorway miles.
When I went down to devon, I drove pretty darn economically and got about 500-550 if I remember.

Just dont have a heavy foot, and fill up half a tank at a time! Its all about the weight saving

450 sounds good to me, wouldnt bother removing any interior parts. More hassle than its worth for what you're after...

thats not bad compared to my 350 on a full tank

I get just over 300 driving economically, 250 if im heavy footed (most of the time lol)

Every engine is different, regular servicing will help
How many miles has the engine done?

I think they are a 45 litre tank so that would average 100 miles per 10 litres which is about 45 mpg (very roughly) so I would say thats not bad tbh!

Apologies if I have ballsed up the calculations btw

VTR- 420 - 440 per tank. Yours sound quite normal. Things that affect mpg a lot:
Tyre pressure's. Set them according to the sticker on your car (open drivers door and look next to the bottom hinge).

Accelerate slowly, keep engine revs sensible and look at the road ahead to anticipate what is happening. Means won't have to brake as much. If you brake you wil need to burn more fuel to get back up to speed again.

Don't accelerate towards a junction you will have to stop at, easy off the throttle before you reach the junction.

If crawling in traffic you might not even have to touch the throttle if it's moving slow enough, just easy the clutch out slowly and the car will move at idle speed around 4mph.

Try not to go over 70mph - wind resistance means that it takes 25% more fuel to go 85mph as opposed to 70mph (I think I read that somewhere lol).

Seriously makes a difference. My other half drives a scenic, she gets roughly 30mpg and I get around 34mpg (still rubbish but hey).

Try it though mate, save you a few quid!
