Play in rear wheels

So I had play, the bearings were leaking grease, had them replaced and all was well and good.

Now, a month later I have the same degree of play in the rear hubs. The bearings are SKF ones and appear in perfect condition.

The hub nuts were done up 'tight' with a bar but not torqued exactly. This will be my first port of call, and I'll torque them up properly.

However, is there nay other reason why the hubs may have play? What's interesting is that I can get play if I wobble the wheel at 90 degrees to the trailing arm (so at about 10 past 8), however parallel to the arm I get none (at about 10 to 5)

Could it be the radius arm bearings, or the stub pins?

Possible mate. How bad is the play would you say, how long has it been like that? Did you only notice it a month later after new bearings or was it like that previously to that. Checked tyre wear?

Just to be clear, it was the wheel bearings that I replaced.

It seemed the play had gone when I replaced them, hell, I even ran a spare set of drums for a fortnight and they seemed solid.

AFAIK when the brand spankers went on the play was gone, and now it's back. Odd.

I havn't checked the tyre wear, although I didn't notice it being obviously uneven

I'd definately see what the torque level is first, if you've overtorqued them to start with you could have deformed the bearings and they've now worn a groove and slackened off.

If that's happened I take it the stub pin is ready for the bin then too?

I doubt I've over tightened them, they're rated at 120Nm IIRC, but my torque wrench is in the post

I would think if the arm bearings are gone enough to feel it up and down you should be able to feel the arm shift slightly in and out too, given the leverage you have.

    wear of tyre?

120Nm....I believe it to be 200Nm. To loose is as bad as too tight.

Haynes says 245Nm front and 140Nm back

    Tyres are 6 months old.

Factory manual says 200Nm as does Autodata for the rear. In the trade most of us avoid Haynes like the plague especially with torque settings.

Remember this is poverty spec drums not a VT* disc hub, is that torque for them?

It is the same for all according to the data.
