saxo wont rev all the way.... video inside

my vtr wont rev all the way round and its doing my head in, ive changed the engine, map sensor, crank sensor (2nd hand) so might be shit still!

anyone experienced this before....... CLICK HERE FOR ANNOYING PROBLEM

That sounds like it is on the rev limiter. Is is really not revving out or not just revving out on the tacho, meaning what is it like when in gear and driving???
  3. #3
Is that the management light flashing on as well???
  4. #4
nah its not revving all the way it stopps at about 5 and the tacho has a spasm and yes the management light flashes on!
  5. #5
Best getting someone to read the engine management code mate and that should pin point the cause ?
  6. #6
will the code be there if it only shows up when driving or will it be stored?
  7. #7
    Unplug battery, let ECU reset?
  8. #8
How many revs you do at 70mph in 5th - I think your rev counter is under reading myself.

Should be around 3200rpm at 70mph 5th gear

It maybe worth getting the fault memory scanned. The ECU is seeing a problem when it is revving as well so it is likely that it will come up with the problem (stored fault). A bizarre fault!!

I have seem faults like this with the following....

    1. Plugs breaking down under cylinder pressure.
    2. Low fuel pressure.
    3. Electrical noise/interference in engine speed (crank) sensor.
    4. ECU faults (not that common as a cause).

Not a massive help I know sorry...

its got a vts box, so about 3500 - 3700RPM

so, new plugs, and how would i check fuel pressure?
  11. #11
Measuring fuel pressure requires the correct kit with adaptors. I am sure I have seen a normal schrieder valve on the multipoint saxo's.

To me it sounds like it is on the limiter but the tacho is not echoing what is being heard.....is the top road speed right down as well???

it just sounds really weird when it happens when u drive, but it will rev to right near the redline then just jolts real violently in the car where its kicking back!

So apart from this issue the car us pulling well under load right up to the red line??? This would rule out plugs, crank senor, fuel pressure etc I think. I would now just get the fault code memory read.

    crank sensor?

    changed it yesterday still nothing

gonna get it on the diagnistics!

earthing? maybe i think this happened to a friend with a retop
  17. #17
what sort of speeds do you get out of 1st 2nd 3rd on the limiter this would tell you if the rev gauge was not telling you the correct revs...
  18. #18
    Lambda or ecu?

single plug ecu or three plug?
  19. #19
Its a single plug, and you thinking lambda? Ill investigate!
  20. #20
Lambda will not make it limit
  21. #21
    launch control

Could it be possible that I've melted the loom because there was one incident where the coil pack supressor, black cube coming off the coil pack loom, bypassed ( ie the cube rotted off) and I earthed it with a connector, and when I tried to start it, it smoked and I think I fucked something!

    bump up

    get it on diagnistic

That black thing is a capacitor, know as a suppressor. It's job is to remove electrical noise generated by the coil pack. It passes any electrical 'spikes' straight to the chassis as opposed to it entering the wiring system. If you shorted it you were lucky not to melt part of the loom as it the suppressor is NOT fused. You may have been lucky as this thing is connected to the relay module directly which powers other bits and pieces.

However, with this missing, the higher up the revs you go the more electrical noise will be appearing on all the cars electrical systems. This will cause serious electrical interference!!!!! Contrary to what most people think, this part is not just to stop the clicking you hear on your radio. In modern cars it is critical.

Your first job is to replace it, but you must make sure that you are still getting a 12V supply to it considering you may have fused the wire. You need to be 100% that the wire and supply down it is good or you will be wasting your time.

A diagnostic test will not show this fault up if the missing suppressor is the fault. An oscilloscope would though however.

wow, thats an answer and a half, u know your shit! so replace the supressor? and test the wires getting a 12v feed!?
  27. #27
Replace the suppressor and test the wire.

I have had a thought since. If at all possible I would try an get inside the relay module if possible. I have no idea if they are sealed with potting compound, never looked at one. It would be useful to look inside just to make sure any circuit board tracks haven't blackened etc.

Try the first two suggestions first.

    been on diagnostics today........

crank sensor changed again, problem solved

    cheers guys
