   My mate got a gti and just got it back, when he took it out it start not going into R or 1 / 2 /3 etc the gear stick is all loose - couldnt find the gears what could this problem be?

   Sounds link one of the gear linkages has poped off.

   Gear linkages are a comon fault mate
   There are 3
   a long and 2 short. The long about £18 plus vat, and the 2 short are about £15+vat each
   
   If you look down the back of the engine bay you will see 3 gold rods. Check these are on
   There is also a control arm with a rubber ball on, this ball pops off they are about £35 +vat IIRC
   
   Other thing is the selection bar from under the gearstick, the pins/bushes rot and fall out.
