VTS 2002 Cooling Fan Question

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Could somebody confirm whether or not the high speed cooling fan runs for a few seconds then stops when starting from cold. Is this a normal on the VTS??? I am sure it does the same when hot also.

    Thanks.

fan shouldnt kick in unless your overheating, notknow this on start up especially cold start, could be a short circuit kicking in when the starter motor engages and this is why it seems it only a shrt time on start up

Are you hearing a noise that sounds like a cooling fan?

If so, you're probably hearing the fresh air pump - on startup, it pumps air into the exhaust ports of the head to improve emissions by warming the CAT up quicker. It's pretty useless in practice, was only added for EU regulations.

as above tbh, you sure its even the fan?

100% it is the fan, I have seen it spinning as I was curious as I initially thought it was a secondary air pump but it sounded too loud. The power steering pump just makes the usual buzz. When it runs, it runs for a very deliberate period as though it is commanded to run, then stops. Only starts to run up again if the engine temp is high, when sat in traffic for instance.

So I can now assume that it should not be running the fan? Normally a cooling fan doesn't run from cold unless it has a playing up sensor, e.g. open circuit coolant temp, but then it would have starting issues. The car starts and runs fine.

    I will investigate later. Thanks

Typical...take the car to work, plug in to do diagnostics....didn't do it. This time I could hear the secondary air pump running, so that is fine.

I will just have to wait until it does it again. It maybe that the ECU had it's knickers in a twist and by virtue of plugging in, it has sorted itself out. All sensor voltages were spot on.

    ....wait and see.
