ball joint help

   i took my car into the local garage due to knocking on f/l and f/r,
   turns out as went over speed bumps it got much louder,
   I was told that you need to remove interior to get to the top of the arm so could replace the balljoint is this correct need help fast as feel like my wheel will come off,
   
   any ideas what this is and how much to replace car is 2002 vtr

   yh u have to life the carpet a bit in the front m8
   
   u will see u the 2 nuts holding the wishbone on, the rest are under the car

   the knocking sounds like its in the wheel arch front left and right wheel arch,
   sounds horrible was told by a mechanic there is slight play in the ball joints and i think the drive shafs may need replacing

   Do you get a short heavy knock when you brake or does it stop?

   ball joints arnt that expensive to replace can get a set for under 20 quid easy, its getting them pressed in and out which can be the costly part. You can hit them out with a hammer but i wouldnt recommend it if you dont know what your doing. A lot of people just replace the wishbones instead as they arnt drasticly more expensive and not too difficult to swap over.
   
   Regards to your drive shafts I'd check your CV boots on both sides for any tears or if they are loose as this would be a prime indicator to if you need your drive shafts changed.

   knocking only happens over small bumps in the road not when brakein

   May be the anti roll bar links or the driveshafts as you mentioned as im 99% sure that the top and bottom joints knock under braking or at least the ones ive done have.

   no doesnt do it when braking just bumps in the road gets worse if turning and going over small bumps in the road it is worrying
