Timing Belt problem.

  1. #1
Alright everyone, bit of an issue with the car.

Changed the timing belt on my saxo vts yesterday but stumbled accross abit of a problem, i think the timing is out, car runs really lumpy and smokes quite abit. Yesterday it stalled twice with the revs dropping.

I thought i had locked the flywheel with an allen key but from what i gathered it hadn't locked properly (allen key didn't drop into place) i proceeded and locked the cams, removed the belt, tensioner, idler & waterpump. After putting everything back together and noticed this, i'm going to attempt another go at doing this properly.

I'm presuming the locking holes won't align up now, is this correct? If so, can i lock the flywheel and somehow adjust the cams to get the timing correct?

How do i go about doing this?

    Thanks, Andy.

lock the crank up in position, take the belt off, lock the cams and re-fit the belt, cross fingers and hope. i've had a 16V come in that was 4 teeth out on the inlet cam and we re-timed it and it was ok

Ok i'll give that a go, what do i do if the cams locking holes don't line up with the flywheel locking hole?

then with the belt off you are going to have to turn the cams until they do line up

Is it that simple? I didn't think you could do?

Yeh, it's that simple - you'll only be moving them a small amount so you can lock them off with an m8 bolt.

yes its that simple, just take ur time and check and recheck before putting the belt back on

and always turn the engine over twice by hand after refitting a belt, this way u can feel any friction and anything thats not right and fix it before damage is done and u start bending valves!

a better /safer way would be
fit crank lock pin pin --remove cambelt
remove lock pin and turn engine back slightly --so pistons are not at top --then turn cams round till you cam fit 8mm lock pins ,then turn crank back to top and fit pin --that way if you have higher lift cams there can be no touching of valves + pistons.
the crank lock pin is 6mm drill size --not an allen key --that is not round
