Minimum Weight

    Right,

    Lets say

1.1 Zest Shell - No PAS, No Sunroof
    Cammed 16v Lump
Stripped as much as humanely possible
    Full GTI/VTS Running Gear

Any guesses as to what weight I could get it down to?
  2. #2
Too many factors like exhaust, windows, body panels, etc

It would be nice to get a saxo/106 down to about 700kg

This sounds like a job for an overly complicated Excel spreadsheet.

Watch this thread, I shall be back after much coffee and some spreadsheeting!

Did a quick knock together of a spreadsheet

Forgive me if my Excel skills are still a bit rusty

Touch over 700kg maybe. 1 (lightweight bucket) seat, no dash, no interior at all, all un-nessecary metal work removed, poly windows, take a hole saw to anything non structural, minimum wiring loom, fibreglass panels where possible (bonnet, boot) etc etc and you might get under the 700kg.

Running 160bhp minimum with 700kg car works out at a nice 230 bhp/tonne, just don't crash.
I know you are trying to save weight, but don't compromise on safety, Get the lightest roll cage you can

    OMP do a 19kg rollcage.
I still think it will be a struggle to get under 700kg without some specialist parts. Every component will need to be looked at, such as choosing the lightest damper units, exhaust system, manifold etc. You will need a nice budget!

depends how much lighter the 106 shell is over the ax.

I have managed to get my ax down to 700kgs with a cage.

I have seen the omp 19kg cage. I wouldn't like to have a bad roll in it. Like standing on a cage of straws

It may not be good for rallying but it will certainly be up to the job for a track car compared to a car with none...
I'd only go stiffer if the chassis needed it or I was racing...

Not a chance in hell of getting a Saxo down to 700kgs

There was one on here once (Bill his name was) who got close but he literally went to the extent of comprimising safety

Only way you'd get close is to spend an absolute fortune and carbon/fibre glass any panel thatd bolted on

Thats some sachievement considering he started at NCAP level 2

When you go to the extent of cutting out of wirse from the loom that arent needed and removing soundoproofing you may as well not eat in the 24 hours leading up to when you're gonna be racing or hey, hire a jockey!

All seems a bit over the top to me when you get to that level

730kgs sounds like a reasonable weight man
