Was you driving in 1st the whole time?
Where were you driving? Town, Motorway? In Traffic?
Any lights on the dials or anything? Such as EM light?
Filled up at a different petrol station, different type of fuel / price massively different?
Car full of people, empty? Carrying lots of luggage? All uphill?
Lots of things

Check for things like blocked air & fuel filter.Or leaking fuel lines.

Could be anything... Ideally, check basic things, Leaks and blockages etc
If no luck, then get checking on some sensors, Temp sensor, lambda etc..
Well, any of the sensors that contribute to the Ecu dealing with fuel.
Hope that helps a little.

its town driving.. not much traffic, mix of sensible driving and maybe a little fun from the lights but not so much that it should only be doing 40 miles.. empty car, maybe just me and one passenger.
i'll check everything mentioned above and do a full service, hopefully it helps, thanks for all the help people!

Tyre pressures play a major part if your looking for more mpg, as does forward thinking and looking further ahead, not accelerating hard and keeping speed no higher than 65-70.
The looking ahead part is like keeping your distance so you dont have to keep tapping the brakes everytime th guy infront does.
Anticipating what the traffic is doing, ie you are approaching a roundabout so don't keep accelerating towards it then brake at the last second. Ease off before you reach it.
Basically drive like your dad lol. ( I am a dad so I can say that!)
