Rear axel

Bought my first ever saxo at the weekend it's an 2001 vtr I've heard a lot of people saying they trouble with the rear axel and them needing a new rear axel my question is what exactly brakes or wears out and how can it be prevented and or how can you tell if it is broke/worn?

rear bearing and stub pin(?). basically its when they're not lowered properly and the bearing wears out/ruins the pin. you get the obvious play in the wheel, and usually it cambers out quite a bit. you can spot it a mile off!

So basically it's a poorly done mod that results in the bearing wearing out which when left in turn wears the stub out?

It happens to any axle mate not just lowered ones, Lowered ones just put slightly more stress on the bearings iirc. Easy way to check is jack the rear at one side, take handbrake off, hold wheel at the top n bottom and push and pull to see if the wheel wobbles. Or if the car is down on the ground, look at the rear wheels from a back/side shot and if the wheel is tilted in at the top quite bad then its more than likely goosed...

Just had a look at mine in the car park now the drivers side appears to be very slightly out of square have to look very hard to see it you think it's worth me giving the bearing a once over? The cars never been lowered

Also if there is some play on the wheel how will I tell if it's just the bearing that needs replacing or the whole axel?

For the amount of hassle involved in replacing bearings etc in the beam, you might as well just by a refurbed one. im axels on here are probs your best bet

agree with all the above, its a fact of life with pug/citroen axles. done plenty on 205's,206's 106,306,saxo,xsara, basically anything with torsion bar back end lol. good thing is they are easy to swap out!
