Refitting Cams and their position

  1. #1
Hi there, i've tried to search the forums but cannot find the information that I need!
I've recently rebuilt the head on my VTS. Now i've come to putting the timing belt back on i've come up against a problem. The bottom end is in position with the allen key locking the flywheel at TDC but i can only turn the cams less than half a turn and they wont turn any further (as if there is valve/piston contact). My question is, is it likely that i have fitted the cams in the wrong position? If so is there a diagram somewhere that someone could direct me to? Any help appreciated!!

I meant to add that i'm trying to set the timing for the cams but cannot turn the cams into postion to enable me to get the locking pins in.....

With the cam cover removed you could use a large spanner or wrench, obviously take care not too mark the camshaft lobes

have you got the cams/pullies the right way round?

if they are standard cams they should have been able to go straight back into position

Yeah they are the right way round as i marked them, but do the cam lobes have to be in a certain position before putting the cam carriers back on as with the bottom end locked at TDC the cams just will not turn as if the valves are touching the pistons??

    Or am i missing something?

Put the pistons half way down the block time the camshafts up then time the crankshaft up should be able to do it that way mate

Thanks mate, only thing is, when I've got the cams locked in position, when I try to put the bottom end on tdc it just locks up and the locking pin will not drop in place as the crank will not turn that far!

Hmm did you gave the head skimmed?

If thats the case, you sure the cams went in the right side? Inlet in the inlet side?

With the cam covers off and cams locked off, does there look to be any valves widely open, look at the follower depth and its relative height to the ones around it. Shouldnt be much lift on any, around 1mm ish down on cylinder 1

I now you should not really but turn the bottom end the other way and see if you can get it to tdc might take a bit o playin with mate and check you have got the camshafts the right way round as above

The cams will contact (valve to piston) on one of the other pistons if youve locked them off and turning the bottom end over...

Should of locked the flywheel first , then timed the cams up
bottom end is not at t.d.c when timing it all up
