J4 Engine Issue! Help

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

Im a "noob" to sax-p. Im off 106oc and having trouble with my GTI.

I'll just list the symptoms for you all!

-Idling everywhere. Idles at 1800rpm sometimes. Heard this is typical of dodgy coolant temp sensor. However i have changed this but this was for a 2nd hand one.

-Sometimes idles at 1000rpm. It will not go lower. But when it idles at 1000rpm it is proper rough and stutters.

-Revs carry on once revved. Embarrassing when changing gear.

-When you let off the engine proper "snatches", like a judder, really aggressive.

-Noticed the other day the revs on idle were going up and down constantly between 1800-2100rpm. Would rise to 2100rpm then drop off to 1800rpm, then would do the same again.

-I disconnected the lambda sensor whilst it was running and NOTHING changed.

-MAP sensor removed as running and it cut out so i guess this eliminates this.

    -NO engine management light.

Here are the things i have done.

    -Replaced spark plugs

    -Cleaned out the throttle body

    -Cleaned ICV.

-Checked and give a quick clean of all the sensors

-Changed coolant temp sensor, but as said this wasn't for a brand new one

    -Diagnostic brought up nothing

    All of this changed nothing!

Im going out of my mind.

    Please help me!

air lock in coolant system? Try bleeding your rad etc, or theres an air leak around your inlet mani, had both probs before with simular symtems, worked for me sorting them, if not...no idea soz lol

Leak on the inlet side somewhere?

Id guess between the inlet & head

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me too

    Cheers for the replies fellas.

I have sprayed abit of carb cleaner around the intake but not completely doused it and couldnt get it everywhere.

Do the inlets have a gasket?

Any other way to check for this?

totally clean your map sensor when you take it out like a good few times . had this problem before .

Was it giving you the same symptoms?

Inlet manifold comes apart in two bits. When you remove the plenum (top part of the inlet where '16V' is), there's four gaskets between that and lower part of the manifold. There's also four gaskets between the lower part of the inlet and the head. Should also be a rubber seal between the inlet and throttle body.

Personally, I'd strip the inlet off the car, give everything a good clean, then fit with new gaskets. Failing that, try a different TPS sensor.

I'm gonna bite the bullet and replace the head. I had a p&p'd head beforehand but took it off the car for when i got cams. Im just gonna get that skimmed, take my time fitting it and hope it cures it!
