Burning smell engine

A burning rubber smell seems to be coming from my saxo 1.1 (t reg) engine, the only thing I've done to it recently was replaced the water, it was also quite hot, is there anything obvious this could possibly be?
There is also a small ticking sound as the belt goes round and I didn't know if this could be an issue?

It's recently failed it's MOT due to emissions and is due to have the catalytic converter replaced, not sure if this could be anything to do with it either.

I also noticed that it wasn't picking up as much power as it usually does this morning too.

You replaced the water while the engine was hot? Thats your problem. You really should let the engine cool down before opening the water cap, I think you have a block in your coolant system not allowing the engine any water. But Im far from sure, its just something to consider. Try bleeding your system, its a 10 minute job

No I replaced the water when it was cold yesterday and didn't start it at all yesterday either. Still not sure what this could be.
I've also noticed that the hand brake light is flashing for some reason, could the handbrake be sticking?

handbrake light can come on flash if brake fluid is also low
