air box, do you really need it!?

   really silly question, but i dont know much about engines at all...
   
   when i got my saxo, there was a black box in the engine loose, i asked my mate who i bought it off what it was and he said "oh its just the airbox mate you dont really need it so i took it off" ....is this right? hes been driving it without the airbox for quite a while now too..

   how are you filtering the air into your engine then?
   The airbox holds the air filter which protects your engine from dirt ingress.

   As above you need the air box to prevent dirt getting into your engine bro?

   You should just get an electric supercharger on their, as the 12v motor spins the air and causes turbulance like a jet or a mexican on the waltzers at the carnival.

   /\ lmao. As already mentioned you need an air filter of some description whether it be standard or a cone filter.

   why dont you drain all the oil out aswell to make it go faster as it just adds weight to your car!!!!!! LOL

   Yeh cheers man, I was wondering when he said you don't need it that why would it be there...as I said I don't no much about engines at all but had a hunch, ill let him know and get it sorted out mate cheers

    It will get lowered soon as I can get springs, but before hand I will obviously sort this out!

    hes kinda right though you dont actually NEED the air box but you really DO need a filter on it of some description

    we had a woman bring a saxo in for an exhaust check and the oil light was on she said it had been on since it was serviced at a local garage 2 weeks before and thought it was meant to be on
    we removed the sump plug and whoever serviced it forgot to put oil in

    the kid had an air filter on it, just the air box was loose underneath it as it fell off and he didnt bother to put it back on...spoke to him on the phone a minute ago and the airbox only fell off last week when his dad tried putting him on a new air filter for some reason, but he fixed it all with the new air filter and cleaned it all up yesterday so its all back to normal He said he didnt know why he told me you didnt need it, he meant it just isnt superly important...thanks anyways people!
