Tricky one, Banging/Clunking over bumps & Changing gear

  1. #1
    okay guys

this ones ragging my head, when im travelling from 0-40mph, every bump i go over...it's like there is something loose on my passenger side wheel, like a clunk or bump every single little pot hole in the road

the car is lowered 40mm all round on adjustables, i've set the shocks to maximum softness and maximum hardness and tbh there isnt a difference, still the rattle/bang continues

I've replaced drop links, checked both wheels/driveshafts and everything to find play but nothing is ouit of the ordinary

Any suggestions or guesses? it's booked in to be looked at next week but if i can find out what is wrong i'll do it myself :s

    Any help appreciated!

What about the plastic arch thing above the wheel? Mine came loose and banged about lol

Nah this is definately something loose in the wheel/bottom arm area...its a metal on metal kind of sound

also makes this sound when i change into 2nd and 3rd gear

Just been reading a few other threads, does anyone else think this might be driveshaft or ball joint related?

The car has always done it ever since I had it I was pretty sure it was the drop links flexing or something, it's never got any worse and I've changed both driveshafts, wishbones twice and the clutch and the donk sound has always persisted. My other suspicion was the bottom engine mount but all mounts looked sound to me. You've got to let me know what it is when you find out

Have you checked your engine and gearbox mountings?

    I would say ball joint.

    Bit of an update!

i do believe I may have found the solution! first off let me start by saying ive just bought a complete set of power flex engine mounts, and ALL suspension bushes....replaced next week!

onto the problem...I was reading a 'how to' guide on 'knocking suspension' and noticed a guy advising to check the cup which sits at the bottom of the spring, and see if there is a silver ring around it where the spring's been moving around...and there is! apparently a small weld will fix it!

Once the bushes/mounts and weld is done, I will of course update to let you know if it's gone...bloody annoying aint it lol!

    Thanks for all help!!

Yeah i fitted the new drop links, and the car feels so much more stable now...it's just that clunk that needs doing now...as i mentioned above im replacing all mounts and bushes with power flex uprated ones, fingers crossed after this the car will be perfect!

By the way...i cant believe how smooth running the engine is, considering the mileage...almost snapped up a complete VTS engine other day, daft idiot was selling the entire lot with box, loom - £300 i thought was a bargain!
