Do i have ABS - Driveshaft

  1. #1
    hello

    got a couple of questions
i have a terrible knocking noise when i turn right in my 2000 vtr , i have been told its the driveshaft on the near side ( passenger side ) by the local garage ... does this sound about right .

i have decided to get a haynes manual and have ago myself .

how do i know if my vtr has ABS , it is on a X plate so its the face lift model .
does anyone buy second hand shafts or just new ones

Basically slam your brakes on (in a safe place) and if the wheels lock up, you don't have ABS!

There will be ABS sensors on each wheel, I don't have ABS, you'll have to wait for someone with ABS to confirm there exact location. You'll also have an ABS light on the dash which will illuminate each time you start the car if you have it.

Buy new driveshafts, buying used driveshafts is a false economy.

This is the front ABS set-up mate:

(From a VTS but should be the same as the VTR system)

VTR's never had ABS as standard, it was an optional extra (bloody expensive one too from what i've heard), so its unlikely that you have got it, but check the end of the drive shaft for a cog like ring (can just be seen behind the disc) and there will be a sensor pointing at it with a cable running to it that is clipped to the strut (bit under the black metal bit between the drop link and disc in the photo).

Hope this helps clear it up for you if not post up a pic of you strut/driveshaft, much like my one and we'll soon be able to tell you

I was told even if saxo has no abs you can still use a driveshaft with abs ring either leave it on or you can knock it off not 100 % though.

you can use an abs shaft on a non abs model 100%

thanks for all the help lads , ill have a check for the cog tomorrow. is it on both sides ?

even if the car doesnt have ABS will it still have the light on the dash .

does it make sense that its the offside shaft if the clunking noise is when i turn right ?

its quite a common fault on these cars isnt it , i remember the day i sold my 106 gti it popped out on the lad lol
