Gearbox

    Hi all,

I posted a few weeks ago saying I'd had my clutch changed as it was slipping, but this didn't seem to fix the problem.

I went back to the garage to get them to have another look, after which they claimed one of either the cam-shaft or gearbox seals were knackered and and leaking oil into the clutch, which was causing it to slip when at high revs. After some 'discussion' they agreed to change all the seals around the clutch area for free.

However, the mechanic who did this told me when I picked my car up the other week that if the problem re-occurred (the clutch slipping) then it would mean the gearbox was the issue rather than the seals and would need replacing (coincidentally 'tight' or 'stiff' gears have been an advisor on my MOT for a few years now).

Low and behold, today the clutch has started slipping again! Unfortunately it looks as though I'll have to pay for the new gearbox (can't see the garage doing that for nowt as well), but before I go ahead and get this done I was just wondering if this will solve the problem? If it will then great, however what I thought would be a simple clutch replacement has already meant three trips trips to the garage and a fair few days with no car, so I would ideally like it sorted before Christmas!!

Any advice is as always greatly appreciated.

What was the garage you went too? Wasn't Mr Clutch or something similar was it?

Mr Clutch did my MOT, was rather surprised they didnt advise me I needed a new gearbox and/or clutch!

Okay, well the problem could simply be that the clutch fitted is shite. I wouldnt fit anything other than Valeo. The clutch cable could also be too tight but that usually means the pedal is sky high.

Other than that, you could have a diff slipping. Does it do it in first and second or is it more noticeable in 3rd, 4th and 5th?

Surprisingly not!! Kwik-Fit it was, although at this rate I'll not be taking it back in a hurry!

I don't really want to take it to another garage as if the new gearbox will fix the problem then I should be able to barter a decent price out of them.

If it is the gearbox though, it is possible this was the problem in the first place, and not the clutch (although the car has done 115,000 miles without having the clutch replaced)?

No, as hard as it is for me to say this, don;t go to another garage, it'll void your warranty.

Wouldnt supprise me if quickfit have fitted a cheapo unipart clutch though... thats what they use for brakes and most other bits.

It does it in any gear as soon as I floor it over about 3000 revs.

When I got the car back originally it seemed fine for a week before the clutch felt like it was slipping again. Then again this time, I have it back a week and it starts slipping.

Hmm, well then if they've already changed the seals, the only other thing to do is to fit a better quality clutch.

If that doesnt help, then kwik fit have mis-diagnosed the problem and you need a new differential, in which case, another gearbox is much easier.

    Thanks for the advice.

How much would a new gearbox fitted usually be, so I'm prepapred if they try to rip me off (more than they appear to have already!)?

A new gearbox would set you back at least £500, a second hand one should be no more than £100, plus a maximum of £150 fitting.

If you want someone else to do the work then i'm located near Gatwick airport.

Cheers for the offer, but I'm up in Newcastle - bit far!

    Thanks for the help.
