Hey, have not long had my saxo vtr, and the gearbox has started to make a whining sound going up and down the gears, the guy i got it off said that it's a new clutch and the biting point is low. the boyf also says that the thrush bearing is rather noisy, but this noise does go away once the clutch is in. so not sure weather its the gearbox or not, what would you all suggest, if it is whats your point of view in putting a 1.1 box into the vtr? Thanks for any help
xx

#2all depends on the clutch kit that was used i know that l.u.k clutches have a noisy thrust bearing for the first 2000 or so miles but if it has had a new clutch it should have been adjusted so the biting point was perfect. as for the 1.1 box it depends on what sort of driving you do as i had one and thought it was shit because it just dies in 5th and you redline at 100mph.

#3Lol I love it when people call it a thrush bearing

If the car is whining, then you press the clutch in and it stops its the release bearing. Put a new clutch in it
Putting a 1.1 box on a VTR will mean it will accelerate quicker but top end will arrive sooner. It will be at higher revs on the motorway etc. So that depends really what you use the car for. If you do alot of motorway driving, and you arent bothered about accleration then stick with the R box, if you never go on the motorway and you want it to pull quicker, then 1.1, vts, xsi or rallye box -
#4Thanks, well according to the bloke i got it off it is a new clutch already on, and biting point is at the bottom of pedal as it should be on vtr, had it 3 weeks surely hasn't gone alreadyQuote:Lol I love it when people call it a thrush bearing

Have you got the receipt to show the clutch was done? -
#6nope no receipt for showing it was done just his word
x
-
#7Oh dear. It may well not have had one, maybe he said that so that if you quized him on the noise from the release bearing he could say its wearing in. Not saying that is the case, just looking at all angles here. It doesnt sound like it has been done to me,
I personally would do the clutch
-
#8thank you. what clutch do you recommend for cheap as possible thanks x

#9Valeo as a first choice
LUK as a second
Avoid transmech like the plague

#10hey,
i have the exact same problem on my vtr, i've had it checked out by two different mechanics, 1 a friend and 2 a garage.
unfortunately you will need a new gearbox. its a pain i'm searching for one myself right now.
the noise is a slight whine under 30 then gets louder the quicker you go. when the clutch is dipped the sound goes away so therefore if i'm correct you clutch is fine. french gearbox's aren't the best out there. but i know that there is a few different gearbox's that will fit but i cant remember them right now but someone with more knowledge on here should be able to help you with that.
hope i've been some help. -
#11driving along its fine its more on the down change in 2nd and 3rd, and when accelerating in first or 2nd when the noise comes apart from that when driving along there no whinning at all
-
#12yea mine is only louder when accelerating, on dropping down a gear! hopefully for you it might be a cheaper fix!
i was thinking bout swapping out the whole engine and dropping a vts lump in there -
#13Well am going to change the clutch and fingers cross that will work, if not looks like the gearbox will be getting changed aswell.
-
#14Sounds like it could be a box if its doing that in 1st and 2nd. Mine was doing the same before and it spat the 1st & 2nd gear synchro out so I rebuilt the box.
Still, with no reciept there even if you do need a box, I would get a clutch in there too
Its hard to diagnose over the internet tbh, would be better with a trip to the garage. Could be either or. What I would do would be put a clutch in, see what happens, if that fails then a gearbox. New clutch wont do any harm if you have no proof it was replaced
-
#15Well i best get saving then lol
-
#16am on the boyf account so can see sale section... would this clutch & box be any good to me???
http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=350108 -
#17Clutch is shit. Wouldnt bother. You will be changing it again next week.
Box wil fit, but as I said, would accelerate quicker but you would have high revs on the motorway in 5th -
#18oh, right, what about a 1.4 gearbox as it in the middle of them both. x
-
#19why not just get a VTR box?? theres plenty around lol
-
#20as im skint atm and found a 1.4 for an ok price and just wondering if this would be ok in vtr.
-
#21ive got a vtr box for £70 if anyones interested, 72k miles and good working order

#22Thanks for all the help guys. whilst driving around the noise has been getting worse so thought best get it into the garage for them to have a look. one the lads took it for a drive and came back and said i have a poorly saxo
looks like I am needing a box and clutch. Its just a waiting game now on when it goes. just a question... what will happen when it does go. thanks xx
-
#23You will loose drive, not something you want when pulling out of a junction into a main road....Quote:Thanks for all the help guys. whilst driving around the noise has been getting worse so thought best get it into the garage for them to have a look. one the lads took it for a drive and came back and said i have a poorly saxo

#24That depends because if the clutch fails then you will loose drive, but if the gearbox fails the wheels can lock up as the differential collapses due to the worn bearings- if the noise you are getting is diff noiseQuote:Thanks for all the help guys. whilst driving around the noise has been getting worse so thought best get it into the garage for them to have a look. one the lads took it for a drive and came back and said i have a poorly saxo

#25Thanks for your help. Have mangaged get a gear box just trying to get my hands on a clutch now. x
-
#26he might have change just the clutch disc and not the release bearing
-
#27Managed get a gearbox and clutch and have now had them changed thanx to the boyf spending time out there in the snow lol. whilst driving around have now noticed a slight high pitched squeel on throttle which soon goes away once foot taken off the throttle. any ideas?
xx thanks
-
#28does it do it in every gear and constantly at every rpm? does dipping the clutch in affect the noise?
-
#29not to sure sorry, ye it does in every gear mainly 5th. the noise gets louder throughout the gear as i accelerate more but starts to fade as i gt to 80. the noise only happens as i accelerate. if i stick at a certain speed leaving throttle in same place the noise goes. if this makes any sense lol. x

#30any 1 able to help please x

#31bump to this for the misses, do whine does go away soon as clutch pressed in car has now cover near to 1000 miles so sure if some think was not right it would of give up by now
-
#32As was said at the start of the thread mate LUK clutches do make a noise for between 500-2000 miles of being fit. What clutch was used? Do you know??Quote:bump to this for the misses, do whine does go away soon as clutch pressed in car has now cover near to 1000 miles so sure if some think was not right it would of give up by now
Also....I did 1800miles with the clutch at the top & whining like mad
Risky, but it never went.
-
#33it was a luk clutch! haha hope thats all it is, as apart from that all is working fine just needs to adjusting the pedal a bit as its still high but this is my own fault
-
#34Nosie should stop soon then mate, LUK are known for being noisy for a while anyway. Wouldnt worry at all.Quote:it was a luk clutch! haha hope thats all it is, as apart from that all is working fine just needs to adjusting the pedal a bit as its still high but this is my own fault
PS...if clutch goes, dont blame me lol.
Seriously though, should be ok mate.

#35cheers fella with give it more miles and see i think it is getting quieter but aint drove it in a few days as aint really seen the misses. now the PAS is been noisy so either low on fluid or the pump on its way out. The joys of french cars
-
#36Bang some fluid in. Pumps can be had for £30-40 anyway mate so not too badQuote:cheers fella with give it more miles and see i think it is getting quieter but aint drove it in a few days as aint really seen the misses. now the PAS is been noisy so either low on fluid or the pump on its way out. #38Hi guys, haven't been on here for a while, have covered probably 10 - 15,000 mile since the clutch was changed, but i am still getting a whine in 3rd and 5th gear, do you reckon this will be down to the replacement gearbox i had or the fact that the release bearing was not greased due to being in a rush to put everything back together? it still goes into every gear fine, if anything the bite has rose since it was first done. could the cable just need adjusting? Thanks Nicky xx
-
#39i get a whine in 5 and 4th to and had a clutch kit done around last week and its making a hell of a noise so taking it back tomorrow .. something is defo wrong :/
-
#40plus the car wont start properly ... it strugles to start sometimes.. anyone no what hes done?
-
#41The gearbox you fitted is not brand new or refurbished so some wear and tear is to be expected im afraid, doesnt help that the fact MA boxes are weaker too.Quote:Hi guys, haven't been on here for a while, have covered probably 10 - 15,000 mile since the clutch was changed, but i am still getting a whine in 3rd and 5th gear, do you reckon this will be down to the replacement gearbox i had or the fact that the release bearing was not greased due to being in a rush to put everything back together? it still goes into every gear fine, if anything the bite has rose since it was first done. could the cable just need adjusting?
