Standard Exhaust Noise

  1. #1
My 1.1 99 saxo seems to be very noisy for a 1.1 standard saxo, is there any reason for this?
I've never heard any other 1.1 saxo making that noise.
It's just a really loud exhaust, but to me it looks standard?

There could be a hole in the exhaust somewhere, have a look underneath.

Is this a bad thing? Will it affect anything other than the sound?
I'll take a look tomorrow if it's not raining.

if you have a hole in your exhuast the car will lose power.

    A lot of power?

no idea mate. bigger the hole worse it be .

It won't make much of a difference to the power, but it will fail an MOT with it. If the hole is in the pipe which contains the CAT, then it could be expensive!

As said mate might have a hole in the system, or one of the joints/gaskets has gone. Best thing to go it get it up on stands and have a look.

Trouble is it recently had to have the cat changed for it to pass it's MOT after it failed on emissions, and now it's even louder with a new cat? Well, the original noise is the same but now there's another noise too!

Stick a cloth over the exhaust while the engines on and you should be able to hear where the hole is

Not only hear it but you`ll see the exhaust gases being pushed out of the hole/s

yeah mines exactly the same mate. Always been rather loud especially when accelerating quite quickly. mine too failed on emissions and had to have a new CAT but was just the same noise. gonna try putting the cloth over the exhaust to see if there is any holes.

If there are would that mean welding or could you some sort of putty/ sealant stuff?

Putty/sealant is only really meant for putting on the joints of an exhaust. You could weld it up depending on where it is, ie if it is on the flange that joins to the backbox, you've got no chance because the backbox won't fit after.

My 1.0 was noisy too, till I managed to get hold of a centre silencer. Because they are cat to back they are generally noisy!!
  17. #17
dont worry, mines kinda loud too ^^

usually the joint between downpipe and centrepipe rots through, the gaskets are dirt cheap and its an easy job if you can get it high enough!
