Gearbox Replacement Advice

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Posted this in another section of the forum, but didn't get much help so I was hoping I'd get more here!

Am after some advice regarding gearbox replacement for my VTR ('02 reg).

Had some bother with what I though was the clutch slipping, but been told by the garage that I need a new gearbox , so I was wondering what kind of price I should be looking at for used and/or refurbed?

Unfortunately the local scrappy I've used before hasn't got any in, although he said he would usually charge £150, which I thought was a bit steep?

Got some quotes from the internet (breakeryard.com, partsgateway.co.uk, 1stchoice.co.uk, carsparefinder.co.uk) which all seem to have come in at about £150+delivery.

I did find a scrap yard in Whitely Bay (I'm just west of Newcastle) who had one in and said I could have it for £70 but he couldn't tell me what mileage the car had done it was from.

Bit of a long winded way to get here! But what price should I be looking at and if I buy of the internet how do I ensure I don't get ripped off (I've never bought car parts over t'internet)? If I'm offered a three month warranty is it actually worth owt if something goes wrong?

Could anyone recommend somewhere? Is it worth paying the extra for a refurbed gearbox?

    Thanks in advance.

If you can afford a reconditioned box then go for it! TBH, theres always a risk of getting ripped of when buying used items - especially a saxo gearbox, you wont know its working 100% until its fitted.

I got done over like this. Paid nearly 200 for a Rallye box "good condition"....turns out its fucked. So have forked out £500 quid on gearboxes and have 2 fucked ones sat in my garage.

Not to sound like a twat or insult anyone, but I take it they're all trust worthy?
