my fan isnt on auto its set to a switch,
on the right side of the fan there is a connector coming off and the wires are on a blue connector block and supost to plug into something and i carnt find where it plugs in
    can someone tell me please?
or can someone look under there bonnet and see

The switch on the passenger side of your radiator closes the circuit when it senses coolant is to hot and this switches on the fan.

The switch you have to use manually has replaced the switch on the side of the radiator.

Circuit should be something like this:

    earth---[-battery+]---[fuse]---[fan switch]---[fan motor]---earth

    What you have is:

    earth---[-battery+]---[fuse]---[manual switch]---[fan motor]---earth

    thanks for the reply
so basicaly the fan connector on the right side is the fan switch and i take it this needs connecting to the back of the fan to get this working automatic again?

There will be a relay involved somewhere along the lines, maybe your wiring is something to do with it?
  5. #5
how would i get this fixed?
anyone here do this sort of stuff?
if so when i get it on the road i will pay someone here to do it
  6. #6
Sorry buddy - Stevo was about right with his diagram for a Mk.1. (No relay)

Follow (or a run a new) high gauge wire from Fuse 5 in engine compartment to the switch on the radiator then that to the fan itself. Id sort it for ya mate if you were local.

    hey outrage here those pix
as you can see the back of the fan is 2 wires
one is a earth and goes to the body and another goes all the way to the switch in the dash and comes back to the battery

and this pic is what comes from the right side of the rad
    a couple of blue wires
    and also a green one
the blue ones go into the rad connector and the green one goes down somewhere maybe its an earth

and heres a close up of that connector block thing

Right mate.. ive had a look

The yellow wire that connects to the fan is the + positive feed to the fan - which is supposed to connect to the engine bay fuse box (fuse 5). It's obviously been disconnected and run to a manual switch in the dash...

The blue wire out of the fan is the - negative feed - which is supposed to go through the switch on the radiator which earths when it gets to temperature and switches the fan on, then cuts off when the temperature drops.

The 3 way connector in 2nd and 3rd pictures connects to the radiator switch and is a standard loom connector for Mk 1 (single speed) and Mk 2 (dual speed) fans. The one your interested in is the middle blue wire, which needs to connect to the blue wire from the fan.

Where does the blue wire from your fan go? Does it have a connector on the end? If it does then it should fit straight onto that 3 wire connector - if it's been cut and put straight to earth, just solder it back on to the middle wire.

So what you need to do is run the yellow fan wire to the engine fuse box and solder it back on to fuse 5.

Run the blue fan wire to middle blue wire of that 3-way connector.

I hope this helps mate, if you need owt else just give me a shout

    hi mate
the wires coming from the fan part are green and the other ones yellow
the green wire is screwed into the body and the yellow one goes to that switch mate
    thanks for the reply mate
    i apreciate it
i see what you mean tho so that yellow one to the fuse 5
and the greeny colour one to the middle blue wire?

i will have a go at this tomorrow because its too dark now mate,
    just wondering tho
what about the other blue wire on that connector whats that for mate?

and can i buy a lead that plugs into that connector then plugs into that fan? or is that the only way to do it now mate

Yep buddy that should do the trick

Why was it put on a manual switch anyway? You might need to replace the switch if its not working properly... CITROEN,FIAT - TEMPERATURE SWITCH/RADIATOR FAN

it was like it when i brought it mate
i will replace the switch then mate because thats probly what was wrong

    1 thing i was wondering
how does this fan know when the engines hot?

does it (rad switch) sence the water gets warmer so it kicks the fan in?
    also is fuse 5 a 10A
  15. #15
Yeah, the saxo one switches on first at ~97°c then back off at ~92°c
  16. #16
    ohh i see now
thanks buddy, ill order that switch and replace it and wire it how you said

would this go through an mot like this?
because i have the mot tuesday and still waiting for my new switch to be delivered so will have to leave it on manual till then
so would the mot place fail this if so ill cancel and book it in again after its done
  20. #20
Nah it's not a reason to fail it - although for the emissions test they sometimes use "cooling fan cut in" as a method to gauge if the engine is up to operating temperature. Obviously with a manual switch this aint gunna happen so you might need to tell them
