floaty steering/knocking?

   wondering if any of you bright sparks has any ideas?!
   
   My friends mk2 vtr, has developed some floaty steering, just feels sharper turning one way then the other. It also nocks aswell at times, and if you hit a bump or cats eyes for example in the road it tries to turn the wheel to the right. Driving it normally it doesnt pull to either side, and under hard braking it doesnt pull either, although under hard braking, it judders from the brakes, as if its a warped disc, and can be felt through the wheel.
   
   Anyone have any sudgestions as to what it could be? originally i was thinking worn bushes in the lower arms but they all seem fine on both sides.
   
   then thought it could be bearings in the top mounts, so have replaced those on both sides for him, but it still does it.
   
   Anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?

   Steering rack may be damaged/worn.

   i had simular symtoms was my track rod ends mate ....

   sounds like track rod ends jack car up and with hands a 3 and 9 tug the wheel side to side you'll feel it if its gone.

   I have identical symptoms, New pair of track rod ends arrived this morning im fitting them in the next few days so i'll tell you if it goes...and i mean mine is IDENTICAL to what you have described

   oh and on another note, i increased the pressure in my tires to see if it made a difference and it made it fucking unbearable so dont do that lol

   see thats what i thought, so will replace track rod ends too, but he has limited funds, so theres no point anyway just replacing every part till you find the problem. And yer if you hold at 3 and 9 the wheel wobbles.
